Ten years of Wikipedia!

The English-language Wikipedia project was founded on 15 January 2001, and will be celebrating its tenth birthday next Saturday:
    http://ten.wikipedia.org

Since its creation, Wikipedia has grown to more than 17 million articles in 276 languages, with 3.5 million in English alone. It's also spawned other wiki-based resources, including a repository of free multimedia, multilingual dictionaries, and collections of public-domain texts, and a number of imitators and competitors.

It's a little weird for me to think about the days when the world's information was scattered across a thousand libraries... and now it's all seconds away on my mobile phone. It's also a little weird to think about how every article there has been improved incrementally by dozens or hundreds of volunteers, instead of being dropped from above by a single authoritative source.

How about you? Have you used Wikipedia as a reference? Have you ever edited an article?

I tried to edit an article once (on a Civ4 mod that I play), and met my first internet troll who kept reverting my changes, without reason. I tried to talk to the guy on his talk page, and he edits out my comments again and again. Finally I had to get other players of the same mod to band together for making the edits stick until he backed down.

First and last time I'll edit anything in Wikipedia. I usually click on the references now to just make sure I'm not being scammed by another similar troll.

I very frequently use Wikipedia. They have just been asking for donations. I give when they ask.

Wikipedia is fine for general info of a non-controversial nature. But, if it's anything controversial or a subject that attracts editing wars by differing camps of entrenched opinions, Wikipedia becomes heavily biased and unreliable. And, unfortunately, the Wikipedia admins are just as biased and no less part of the problem. Unfortunately for Wikipedia, those problems are making more and more people regard the entire site as a worthless reference.

That entry was written by one of RealJock's own, Fearthefall. According to him it's his best work. I won't disagree, because most of his other work sets a very low bar.

10 years of content that is often inaccurate and rarely updated.
