The NPR report says: " You simply can't load up artillery guns and throw rounds into a crowded neighborhood. So the enemy has time — while the U.S. forces are clearing the area, putting together a patrol, launching helicopters — to simply fade away into buildings and hide away in alleys."

Why the hell not? If the insurgents hide among complicit civilians, they deserve the Dresden treatment. The problem is, we aren't using enough High Explosives.

moudi, Tell it to the insurgents cowardly hiding among civilians. If they want to wage war they had their chance in March of 2003.
It looks like hiding among women and children is the normal method of waging war with muslims. Unfortunately the US military has used restraint. I hope they end that practice soon.

Ummm, well because it's against the law. Collective punishment is not permissible under the the Geneva Convention and many other laws signed and ratified by our government.
Is it also one of the crimes against humanity that the Nazi regime was charged with. Rememba them? Concentration camps, gas chambers...hello?

    swimbikerun,
"Collective punishment is not permissible under the the Geneva Convention and many other laws signed and ratified by our government."

Nonsense! I was in the Army for 24 years, I'm well versed in the law of land warfare. Forbidden targets cease to forbidden targets when the enemy fights from those positions. If an insurgent uses a dwelling as a fighting position, the dwelling is a legitimate target.

Ok by that logic a soldier is justified shooting into a crowd of people if someone fires a gun at him or her.

Do you really think you can just indiscriminately bomb people and that that is really the best solution?

swimbikerun, Sure it's the best solution. Since the "crowd of people" shield the shooters, they deserve to be treated like sand bags. If they don't like it, they can stop doing it.

Soufian, coming from you, that's a compliment. Thanks

John, if you were in the army then you should know what LOAC is. You are not gonna go running into a hosptital or a church shooting or bombing it just because some crazed goon with a gun is doing it. I think you better go and read up on your rules and regs before making blantant remarks like that. Things have changed in the last 24 years since your time. Certain situations might allow you the freedom to do such a thing but not without some serious thought and of course the consequences thatare sure to follow.

That's craziness. What happens when you become that innocent bystander?

Guy101, that's why we have "red states", people like him who think it's morally acceptable to kill other people based on whatever twisted logic they can come up with.

realifedad, War is serious, and if civilians want to shield combatants, they become combatants, and deservedly get treated like combatants, shot. Enough of them get shot, they'll stop this practice.

YEP !!! and none of this would have happened if the we had stayed home and minded our own business, instead of going to the middle east for a resource war (OIL) not one child should have died for this !!!!!

realifedad, so, how many children reportedly died in Iraq from the "Oil for Food" program? If all that was true, Iraq is much better off now, isn't it?

John !!! Do you have any children? I have two, and 3 grandkids. those children who have died, no-matter under what US policy, was a shame for us to be involved in. When I see my grandkids, or my adult son and daughter, I see an Iraqi, a palestinian, a chinese, a russian, a serbian, a mexican, or any other nationality, it doesn't matter, we are all alike none should have to die for a resource war. There's not enough oil under the earths surface to be worth killing people over. We should be civilized enough after all these thousands of years to know better, but no, we got a "GOD FEARING MAN RUNNING OUR COUNTRY" so we get to go back to the stone age !!! LOL
