I want to beef up my boyfriend

He's a cyclist and a vegetarian, but he's open to coming with me to the gym and trying to beef up. I'm hoping for some easy workouts to start him off with. I'm pretty sure with his body type he could ratchet up the lean mass, he just hates working upper body.

You say he hates working his upper body.....Give him some time...maybe over time he'll venture in upper body routines....Since he's a vegetarian getting the proper amounts of protein will be an issue...There's a lot of soy based protein powders and tasty items like boiled soy beans....etc to supplement his diet....Much success....BUD

if he's a cyclist, all the gym time in the world won't work (actually, it's likely to leave him thinner). if you really want to beef him up, start with upping his calories. i say that as a former cyclist and current vegetarian.

Is it something he wants to do? Cause that's not cool if you're forcing him just because you want him to look more muscular.

Your reply made me curious, so I did research.

Semen does contain some fructose, vitamin C, and protein (not much though). Here's my favorite line:

"The normal environment of the vagina is a hostile one for sperm cells, as it is very acidic (from the native microflora producing lactic acid), viscous, and patrolled by immune cells."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semen#Composition_of_human_semen

    I personally avoid hostile environments.

Lol! I agree, as a vegetarian myself that is one type of protein i'd have hehe...

Seriously, mass complex protein shakes helps gain weight. Maybe tone down the biking just a bit, or he'd burn it all off too quickly. Yes definitely need to work the upper body muscles for it to stick.

    ^^This.

Endurance athletes are generally thinner in build. If he's going to bulk up, he'll need to cut way back on the cycling and/or start eating like a fat kid at a buffet. If he really loves cycling, don't force him to cut back on it if you just want to change the way he looks.

If you must drag him with you to the gym, he'd benefit from more whole-body compound exercises. My race times dropped once I started doing the olympic lifts (mostly squats and deadlifts), and some of my fellow runners and cyclist friends have had similar experiences. Use that as an incentive for him to try. Though we didn't bulk up tremendously, we did see a noticeable difference in the way our upper bodies looked.

It is something he wants to do, but I have to show him how to love the pain of weight lifting.

    It shouldn't be hard.
