A schizophrenic on RJ?

[This was originally posted in the "mental health" subtopic. Maybe I'll get some more responses here.]

I'm actually quite concerned that one RJ poster is schizophrenic and may be untreated/undiagnosed. (I don't mean the usual right or left wing posters, so hold your horses, people.)

I don't think he's violent. I mean somebody who's thoughts are so weird that others have noticed them too. Read some threads in this subforum and you'll quickly realize who I mean.

He is not just "creative," if you're wondering. E.g. Amar is always creative with his posts, but he always makes sense. Paulflexes is a wiseass and his dry logic is unusual, but he's certainly cogent.

What is one to do? I don't know if I should write to him (because he might think it's insulting) or ask the site owner to do something about it.

And I'm not referring to myself, in case you're wondering.

Normally I would have kept it to myself, but in light of the Tucson shootings, it's been bothering me. Loughner had been posting weird things on a gaming forum too, you know.

No, SB, your thinking might be self-directed, but so is mine (most of the time). Nothing illogical there.

This guy doesn't typically post on political threads.

There's more than one. But if you have a legitimate concern, message the RJ admins. Don't make a public announcement. If it's bad enough RJ will notice and ban the person. Also, keep in mind many people do not take the internet or RJ serious. So if you're about to nark on someone who's joking around, the finger's only going to be pointed at you for being an oversensitive nanny that misinterpreted someone's humor. The internet is a bad bad place for PC.

You know, Jake, the point is not to ban the person. A great opportunity was missed by the community college in expelling Loughner without a decent follow up plan.
I would like to message the guy, but if it comes from more than just me, it might make more of an impact. The message would presumably involve something like suggesting to him to be examined by a psychiatrist or psychologist, and then go from there.

And no, it's not you, Jake, and not you, MMTM.

Yes, but he doesn't ever post anything violent. A bit odd most definitely, but hardly dangerous. I don't think anything should be done. I mean some of his posts are actually quite funny - and I'd like to think that they were intentionally so - but realistically, the options for action are just horrible all things considered.

Let's run through the possible scenarios - under the assumption that those around him don't recognize the um issues:

    1. Someone tells his parents. I mean there are those who occasionally drop by on either of the chat rooms who openly declare they are under 18 and are invariably kicked off when they're reported. Telling someone whose parents may not be receptive to them presumably being gay may result in much greater problems for the individual.

    2. Tell local mental health professionals. Has he shown himself to be a danger to himself or others? From what I've seen, not at all. If anything if it's the same person I'm thinking of, he seems deliriously happy.

    3. Have him banned. But for what? There are some far worse offenders who contribute far less - plus some of his threads sometimes morph into something at least marginally interesting. Does his removal actually RJ better? Does it make him better? If anything possibly quite the opposite.

What other possible scenarios do you see?

As I've pointed out before, schizophrenics (and bipolar disorder patients) are tougher to treat the longer they are undiagnosed. He's only in his 20's, and to miss out on better jobs or education at his age is going to impact his life a lot, if his mental disease doesn't get treated early.

Then again, I'm just trying to make a diagnosis via his forum posts, which is definitely not the professional way to do it.

And the hope is that he has enough insight to take a piece of carefully worded advice and act on it.

Then perhaps the appropriate course of action is to message him directly.

Try messaging him in private to see if his reactions are normal. Also, you have me paranoid because I'm in my 20's and I post a LOT of dry humor posts.

Jake, I may not agree with you all the time, but you're funny. If I was thinking of you, Paulflexes would be even worse. (He's like Wittgenstein with his logic). icon_lol.gif

The other reason I don't want to message him without some support is: I might get banned by admin for "harassing" him. I'm going to write to admin to tell him my concerns and then go from there.

Ok phew glad you don't think I'm schizophrenic, cuz I'm only bi-polar.icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Also, do you think it's the guy from California? There was some band artist who went BAT-SHIT crazy on the forums during the summer. He got banned several times but kept coming back. In fact, I think he was the reason this "30 second post wait limit" came into being. He was an amazing poet though. icon_lol.gif

That would be a good thing. Why do you think testicular cancer (another disease of young people mostly) gets diagnosed much sooner nowadays?

You said it best " which is definitely not the professional way to do it."

Lets say he is a schizophrenic, the assumption that he is writing weird stuff means he is undiagnosed or untreated is unfounded. I am not sure how much experience you have with schizophrenics but what you are doing is not helpful.

I have not a clue who you are talking about but I would suggest if you have questions about someones mental capabilities that you engage them directly.

Asking others to accept your diagnoses and then act in a unified way is bizarre.

If he is not violent to himself or others then leave it alone if you can not confront the individual yourself.
