If there's one thing I can't stand, it's snobbery and one-upmanship. People who try to pretend they're superior. Makes it so much harder for those of us who really are.icon_confused.gif

Tipping is one those subjects that always sparks debate flame wars. icon_lol.gif

In this case, I'd say the restaurant screwed up. By your account, the guy came 30 minutes after you called the restaurant and asked where your food was. Which is reasonable. I would have given him a "standard" tip. Then I would have called to complain to the restaurant, about why it took so long to get your order out for delivery. If they're cool about it, they might give you a discount next time. If they give you an attitude, then don't eat there ever again.

I always forget to tip for things in the usa just because I didn't I needed too. like if a massage costs 120 bucks...or that there's not really any 'service' associated with a taxi ride I gave up tipping for pizza delivery when they wouldn't bring it my 3rd floor door, they would call and make me walk to the curb and hand it out the window of their car...I didn't consider that to be delivery. I noticed if I pre tipped on my card they'd do that but if it was cash on delivery they would come to the door

Generally in Europe there's no tipping. Occasionally 5 bucks for 2 or 10 for a big party of 5-6 iin a good resteraunt. they usually add an 8% service charge if more than that.

Sometimes I wish we did though... today the waitress stood with her back to my table talking with friends for a half hour while I rattled my empty water glass. It took so long to get served I was running late and after 10 mins of trying to get her attention I left exact change on the table and we left

You're punishing the wrong person. I used to be a waiter, and man did it suck when people would cut the tip/not tip because the meal was lousy/slow/or any other thing that had nothing to do with the server.

5ebastian saiddo you think a 2hr wait is acceptable?

I mean shouldnt there be a standard that one but adhere to ?

And yes living in this town I dont condone racism so why should I reward someone that has that kind of mentality?

"Buy the ticket, take the ride" You don't have to "reward" zilch! Walking out of dining and or not accepting a belated food delivery, is commonplace for people all over... I try and not go all Soviet Union if unanticipated "shit happens" but in lieu of massively being gypped, .... Hellooo Bigg Red Truck...BEEP BEEP You better believe I'll hold it down like no other'! I may be one digit removed, but believe me.... .. It's a whole 'nother world.. icon_lol.gificon_twisted.gificon_lol.gif

Dude, people get tips for doing things right, if they told you that they will deliver food in 45 minutes and it took them almost three times longer, come on... seriously.

    Never run out of food

Especially if you're looking to keep muscle
Especially if you live in areas where you're snowed in

Ive tipped 50$ on a meal before, so before you assume im a snob, thats the furthest thing from the truth.

2 hours and $75, for one person, for a delivered meal??
I would have called after an hour and cancelled, AT LEAST. 2 hours is shameful. The manager should have called you and apologized and comped the meal.

Tip? In your case? Give yourself a break.

Seldomly do I not tip when it comes to food services, whether its dining in or take-out.

I'm just like you 5ebastian, and when I not tip I have to have a reason .. I think you did have one so chill and don't feel bad about it.

Should have still tipped the driver. I used to deliver for Domino's and would get pissed when I didn't get a tip or got a lousy one. Late deliveries aren't the drivers' fault, it usually due to an overflow of food that has to be made so you get a back up. Plus the delivery charge isn't given to the drivers.

I have done it, tipping a waitress one penny and left a note on tip section saying "Next time pay attention". I don't feel guilty if I ask for something 5 times and she forgot or ignored it because she was busy talking with her friends. Tipping is for service and I will not tip if service sucks.

$75 for food!? Did you get the whole damn lamb instead of the rack of lamb?!

5ebastian said2 1/2 hrs is unacceptable. Now that my blood sugar levels are up I feel better... I just feel like a prick. I have never not tipped someone but I just cant force myself to reward incompetence... but then again why do I feel so bad?

    Was I wrong?

Hard to know. If the food wasn't stone cold, it's likely the driver didn't stop over somewhere on his way to your place to have a few, but it was instead the restaurant's fault. These guys get paid for making lots of deliveries quickly, and getting back there for more.

Any competent place with which I've dealt would have phoned to alert you to the delay. And after 2 hours, I would have phoned them to learn what the problem was. I've had places lose my order, and I would have waited forever. In those cases I've cancelled the order, and told them they wouldn't get another from me, after first attempting to speak with their manager to make sure I wasn't just saying that to an ordinary employee who merely handles their calls.

I'd have asked the driver why the order was so late. If he claimed he just got it for delivery I would have tipped him as usual. Then phoned the restaurant to verify. I could have somebody's job for lying to me, or expect the restaurant to comp me for their own mistake. Either way, the tip would be small change.

Yeah I don't logically foresee the circumstances that would lead me to run out of food to the degree that I have to pay $75 for a single tepid meal I eat at home.

Man, I so prefer the New Zealand system, where servers are paid a living wage and tipping is optional for exceptional service.

Well, you can't be all that big of a shit if you posted this publicly, and invited this discussion. A real shit would have just done it and forgotten about it, never said anything. I think there's still hope for you yet. icon_wink.gif

You can always contact the manager and still arrange to get the tip to the driver. Especially after the fact it would make an impression and he would appreciate it.

Its not too late, if its bothering you that much. You could always drop by the restaurant when youre able to and leave him something. I had to do that once when I accidentally took the wrong receipt (their copy instead of mine).

Dont beat yourself up, you can still fix it.

Yeah but in some states, they work off tips. I think here in az they only get paid 3 or 4 dollars an hour since they are tipped employees. Now if the service sucked then I wouldn't tip them very much.

If the service is ok at any restaurant, even Denny's, you should tip. Their pay is based on tips. If you can't afford to tip, then you can't afford to eat out.
