how do you respond when a guy or just someone in general who you've never met greets you with "Hey, whats going on man"

I feel like thats so awkward, i usually respond with, notin, which sounds stupid, and responding with, nothing, would sound like you don't care. But im not going to respond with well i just came from the grocery store......

I went into a store at the mall and two associates said that to me.....

Is this really a problem? It's just small talk. You respond with small talk. "Not much. How's it going?"

I just answer the question, no matter how mundane it sounds. I just take them as generic greetings or icebreakers. I doubt they expect anything profound anyway.

Say "Thanks. I'm just looking but I'll let you know if I need assistance." They'll leave you alone to shop.

If an anonymous passerbyer said that to you, say "Hey" and keep walking. If you want to be friendly or know that person, say, "Nothing much and you?"

You're in control of meeting and greeting people so it's up to you to respond to an innocuous question.

And so I wake in the morning and I step outside and I take a deep breath and I get real high and I scream from the top of lungs, "What's going on?" I said, "Hey, what's going on?"

Well said. I think expectations have risen a little high if we expect to be greeted with "Good evening, fine Sir. How do you feel about life, war, poverty, and politics?"

just tell them what ur doing atm, besides something personal or private, trying to initiate a conversationg with the other person can be ways of networking and getting to know one another.

Just say hi and smile. Then go about your business.

Or you can respond with, "Qu'est-ce? Désolé, je ne comprends pas ce que vous me demandez à une telle question pathétique."

I will respond to these because it still gives me SOMETHING to work with. Just think, "Hey, what's going on?" is still better than just "Hey."

I will usually say something like "Not too much just sitting on my ass watching tv. you?"

I don't get why ppl get all wrapped up in high school panties. It's not that big of a deal. Some bonehead is extending himself, does this guy need to write you a novel to get your attention? It's not that serious.

The longest friendship that I have right now started with, "What's up, Man?"
Live in the moment and let it flow. Try not to over analyze what's happening and try to be IN what's happening.

If you're currently in a pissy mood (bored, tired, gloomy), I think it's best to keep that to yourself and say something generic like what others have posted.
No one wants to hear that dismal crap you gotta say, unless, of course, you're really good friends with this person and they're concerned.
