I won't make any specific recommendations, but only say that a webcam is one piece of merchandise where spending a little more is worth the extra dollars. In general, I'd stay away from the $40 Quickcam. You probably won't be happy.

I actually have a cheaper webcam called the Logitech Communicate STX, I replaced my $140 webcam with this one and love it so much more. I use this cam for everyday chatting and it is the cam I use on my website as well. Remember that lighting is probably more important than the type of cam you use and you can also use some camcorders as live feed webcam as mine will.

All recent Macs (from 2006), except the Mac Pro and Mac mini, have an iSight web cam built-in. Compared to some of the PC cams I've seen, the iSight takes much sharper resolution video and has better audio.

So another thing to consider if you are contemplating buying a nnew computer...

logitech is a pretty good brand. even if you lose the disc you can find the drivers on their site, not matter how old the model is. but in all reality, the video and sound quality is just gonna be reduce to whatever the site's settings are. so, getting a cheaper one vs. a more expensive one doesn't really matter. sure the nicer one may have a few more options or allow you to do more, but only within it's own software so the benefits are irrelevant online.
