No one in there right mind thinks inheritance is the same as income. ...
I have seen Weiner interviewed on TV where he did support inheritance taxes. His justification was that it is unfair that money only inherited, not earned, should be tax-free.
The position on inheritance taxes by the left-wing more than anything else illustrates their world view. In effect, their desire is not to just redistribute in income, but also wealth or assets. This is very significant. Expanding on the fairness point they always tout, they believe it is fundamentally unfair that one person is born into a wealthier family than another. They believe that someone does not have the same right to inherited money as they do to money they personally earn.
In my opinion, many of these people would be quite satisfied with a 100% inheritance tax, in other words, preventing one generation of a family from passing on the fruits of their labor to the next generation. Something this extreme would never fly with the moderates, so they don't state such an extreme position.
That income taxes have already been paid on this money does not matter to them. They don't care. It also reflects their disregard of the family unit. They don't look at this as income earned and taxes paid by the family. How else could they justify requiring taxes paid when money goes from one family member to another?
In more blunt terms, they advocate government seizure of wealth and assets as part of a grand scheme to level the playing field. More than anything else, their position on this earns them the label, socialist, that they so strenuously hide from.
