Don't have a link yet, but getting headline pushes about this. For a lot of us in the older generation, this guy, flashy though he was, was the face of male fitness when we were growing up. 96 - God bless him!

    Was he really?
    Are you sure?
I won't be surprised if you're right - I kind of suspected it - but I'd like to know for sure.

From "The Gay Book of Lists" by Leigh W. Rutledge

"Incensed at the growing visibility of gay men in Los Angeles, former king of television exercise announced in 1979 that he planned to march down a one-mile stretch of Sunset Boulevard with a 350-pound barbell on his shoulders in order to protest the "damn queers and homos and little boy prostitutes" who had "taken over Hollywood." LaLanne was forced to cancel the march after he was injured in a car accident."

I did not know this. Well, obviously someone I can't endorse, assuming he never repented of that attitude.

I'll change that "96 - God bless him!" above to: "96 - what took him so long?" icon_mad.gif

I think he was already off the air by the time I was old enough to realize, but my Dad was talking about how he had a morning show.

That would be kind of nice these days with my morning cardio...LOL

RIP, he was certainly a trailblazer!

Much of what we know as Functional Training started with this man.

Even though he was a homophobe he did alot of good for a lot of people.

    RIP, Jack.

For such a raging homophobe, those are some of the gayest pictures I've seen. icon_lol.gif

Even so, he was ahead of his time in promoting health and fitness. RIP

I suggest we picket his funeral with some placards:

    GOD HATES
    CENTRIFUGALLY

Now that I've read his obit on the BBC, I'm 99% positive that Uncle Jack from Arrested Development was based on Jack Lalanne. icon_lol.gif

The video is one of the many reasons Arrested Development was an amazing show.

I had heard that Jack Lalanne was a homophobe from someone who brought me that information about the Hollywood parade. I was shocked to hear this, but you have to understand that his career was the most important part of his life, and when he started back in the late 1940s and early 1950s, he simply couldn't identify as being gay or bisexual. It would've ruined his chances, and Jack was a born salesman who could be helpful and effective in healthy living and developing a beautiful body.
When I first saw the duo pictures of Jack with his buddy Jack Thomas in those Russ Warner pictures, they had black pouches and were not total frontal nudity. I thought the two Jacks were nude because the g-strings were painted on; about 30 or so years later when I saw the photos of them nude, I said to myself, OMG, they're one of us. Then I heard that Jack Lalanne was trying desperately to suppress those pictures to no avail. He never could know that such a thing as the Internet would come along and disseminate all those nude pictures of him with Jack Thomas. (BTW, whatever happened to Jack Thomas?) I don't know if his wife Elaine Lalanne ever saw those pictures, but it would be interesting to know her reaction if she ever did see them; she would've have realized that she had married a gay or bi man.
Despite the nude pictures, Jack Lalanne seemed to have weathered the "mistake" on his part and this matter was never brought up. However, the supermarket tabloids should have gotten wind of those pictures, but I'm not so sure it would've ruined his career. Arnold Schwazenegger's nude pictures of him from the gay magazine After Dark were made public in the Globe tabloid, and it didn't seem to have hurt him. He also did a front nudity pose that has made its rounds on the Internet; still no scandal questioning his sexuality.
BTW, where does one buy those ballet slippers that Jack wore in his exercises? I adore them but without the strap; also those pants. Most of the online stores don't feature items like ballet slippers, Greek sandals, pants, wrist bands, bicep bands, body bindings, etc. Most of them just sell cothing (g-strings, pouches, bikinis, swimsuits, etc.).
