when i was 10 i decided i wanted to be janet jackson when i grew up. it didn't dawn on me that janet was already janet and would still be janet once i'd grown up. i also was not terribly put off by the challenge of being born white and male. i wasn't bothered with such trivialities at the time.

i finally realized i wasn't going to be janet jackson (but not til i was about 25 i'm proud to say - i held onto that dream all the way through grad school), and i'm very pleased to be me (a professional choreographer who might not have gone down that road if it hadn't been for my hero), so although i didn't grow up to be a fabulous black woman i did achieve something precious to my heart because of the inspiration i got from one.

what did you want more than anything else growing up, and did you finally get it?

    Fantasy singular?

I had a gazillion fantasies as a kid (probably only about half that now), so it's impossible to list them, but just a few highlights of ones I have yet to achieve:

    Famous architect
    Famous movie director
    Walk on the moon
    Climb Mt Everest
    Learn to fly a jet
    ...

I did nail a few tho:

    Run my own business
Fly faster than sound (Mach 2.2)
And... oh, I suppose I can tell this crew... big biceps (* blush *)

And yes "big" is a highly relative term, but I know what I was thinking when I was 10 years old, and I crossed that bar, so that's what counts for this thread icon_smile.gif

    hm.. preteen ambitions:

    Doctor,
    Astronaut,
the vague 'I want to be a Scientist'

*sigh* Even as a kid, I was a total Geek.

Obviously none have been fulfilled yet. And I DON'T want to be a doctor after all. A scientist, I dunno. An astronaut, sure! Just find me a spaceship. icon_razz.gif

Geez, dnacerjack, what a depressing thread!

When I was a kid I wanted to be in a pop band, looking like beatniks (of course, who didn't at that age icon_biggrin.gif ). So that didn't happen.

At around the same time I discovered the wonders of Ancient Egypt, taught myself some basic Arabic, and decided I was going to be an Egyptologist.
    So that didn't happen either.

Then I also wanted to be an astrophysicist. The closest I came to that was dating one.

Thanks a lot! It's 10am and I think I'm going to start drinking now. icon_cry.gif

Well I am not going to share my childhood dreams that have not come true yet. That would make me look a little pathetic.

I think I was 5-years-old when I first saw Indiana Jones. I loved the move, but what really captivated me was the idea of going into the Amazon and finding ancient ruins and treasure. That was one of my dreams.

I ended up traveling through Central America and I visited all the major archaeological sites. I was in Planque and I had just finished looking at every thing within the grounds. I was walking down the hill to my hostel and I decided to walk in the jungle. I walked in maybe 15 yards when I found an old wall to some kind of ancient building. I explored it a little and found that it had already been excavated. I walked in the tunneled out passages and just took my time looking around. I had such a great time.

I would say that my dream came true. I never found any treasure or artifacts there, but just finding an uncharted piece of ancient Mayan civilization was like finding treasure to me.

I am still working on making my other dreams come true, but I am still a child so I think I have enough time.

One childhood fantasy of mine was to finally jump off the high dive at our club. God, I was so scared - wondering if I would even live through such a dive! I stressed about it before actually making the dive, then once I did it (and lived!) you couldn't keep me off that diving board.

Another fantasy as a really little kid, was to get a new Schwinn Stingray bike. I had to raise the money myself - $59.00 plus tax. It took me so long mowing lawns and hand washing peoples' cars to make this kind of money that I really appreciated that bike - and took great care of it - keeping it clean and never going off curbs with it!

I am pretty sure most of my childhood fantasies involved Christopher Reeve in his Superman costume...

Mmm well I still want a horse after all these years. So I'm gonna get a chinese crested dog to kind compensate for it.

    Chinese Crested

A sidenote to dancerjack. I think you are a great addition to the RJ crew. One day I hope you write a book. I bet you have alot of wisdom to share with knuckleheads like us.

    What was your childhood fantasy?

To have a beautiful voice and a handsome face, sing and perform, and make all adolescent girls cream their panties at the thought of me.

    Did you achieve it?

    Yes, when nobody is looking.

    Concert pianist.

I had to settle for cocktail-lounge pianist. And then I stopped even that.

    I had 2 childhood fantasies.

1 was to have the total powers of Jean Grey/Phoenix so I could be the world's first real superhero. I liked other characters better, but her powers were hard to beat. Plus, I could use the omega level telepathy to get any man I wanted.

2 was to be a novelist. Now, I've published a few poems and short stories over the years, but have yet to complete a novel that I like. I have 2 manuscripts that I will never share, as I think they're garbage. Part of my block is there is a certain book I KNOW I need to write first, but I'm afraid to write that book. Hence I'm distracting myself in 08 by writing a screenplay in my spare time.

My childhood fantasy was to be a commercial airline pilot. Then I found out near-sighted people cannot become professional pilots.

In my teen years I wanted to become an ascetic hermit and stay away from people icon_evil.gif A couple of depressions later I found out I wasn't as emotionally self-sufficient as I thought.

Now I want to be myself where ever that takes me. Much more difficult but rewarding then the first two.icon_confused.gif

Oh god, I had several and many have come true. I guess I'll relate the two that never came true.

When I was a kid I was really into gore, creature makeup and special effects. Over the years I learned more and more about stage makeup and special effects. Like how to make foam latex and molds to create masks and prosthetics. I would construct scenes with model cars and buildings and rig them up with fireworks and pools of my moms nail polish remover, using modeling glue as a fuse I'd blow it all up..if only we had a video camera!!

Even the idea of Plastic Surgery was intriguing to me. The whole idea of changing people's faces and bodies was something that had a an odd draw for me. I used to make clay faces on foam head and conduct nose jobs and face lifts.

So there it is, Special Effects Artist and Plastic Surgeon are my missed childhood fantasies.

Wanted to be an Optometrist since my first pair of glasses in 6th grade.
Didn't make that, but I remembered a saying from my youth: If you shoot for a bulls' eye and miss, it'll still be alright as long as you land on the board. I'm a massage therapist, still helping people feel better and am constantly learning about the body. Things may not have turned out how I wanted them to, but I'm not sad about that dream not being a reality.

Just have to work on the music dream.

As for you, dancerjack, Shirley Q. Liquor made it as a fabulous black woman, so I believe in you.

I always thought it would be cool to be on the radio ever since I was a small kid. I was a freak about it! When I was 18 I got the chance to work at a small local radio station which began my ten year stint in radio. It rocked!

PS. DancerJack, I love that you wanted to be janet lol

one of my other childhood fantasies was to be able to fly. i had these incredibly vivid dreams where i could feel my guts wrenching as i changed direction quickly. the air was blasting through my hair. the sun felt good too, plus the bird's eye view of my yard was charming.

the closest i've come to that is the big leaps i learned how to do in modern dance
