What is the 'gay lifestyle' and do you live it?

I always wonder what people mean when they talk about a 'gay lifestyle'. Does it mean everything you do is somehow connected with your sexuality?

Or is there a definition or understanding of it that someone can articulate?

I wouldn't have said I live a 'gay lifestyle' - I just live a fairly regular (boring) kind of life of work, gym, friends, family etc.

    Anyone like to comment?

Like the "gay agenda" it's a homophobic myth that focuses on negative images, such as promiscuous sex, deviant behavior, substance abuse, cross-dressing, etc. I make the distinction that I live a gay LIFE, not a lifestyle: I live with a gay male partner, most of my friends are gay, many of the daily places I go are popular with other gays, and I am totally out.

Now just change that last sentence to read "straight" instead of gay, and "female" from male, and I'd be describing myself as a hetero man. As straights live a straight life, I live a gay life. And there's nothing the least bit strange, odd or deviant that I do as a gay man, not a "style" but a very ordinary way of life, only made different by who I mostly share it with, not by how I act.

Thanks. Though I suppose I should have written "homosexual agenda" rather than "gay" because that's what the homophobes will more commonly say. Homosexual has a more clinical and sinister ring to it than gay, why they like to use it against us. An improperly cobbled-together Greek & Latin hybrid word, perhaps a consequence of a late 19th-Century fad for personality taxonomy (the science of classification), when it was first introduced by several German writers.

My ilfe style has consisted of School and two jobs for almost 5 years, the only part that makes it gay is the fact that I like guys.

But in general I think gays live life the same way heteros do, we just sleep with the sex is all.

I live it by poking other guys in their prostate with my cock.

Occasionally it involves smacking asses, twisting nipples, tying up piggy bottoms, and grabbing their hair and pulling their head back as I ram them into fits of mutually orgasmic glee.

Other times it involves indulging my addiction to Dr. Who episodes on TV.

    Just sayin'. icon_razz.gif

"Gay lifestyle" is a phrase used to demonize gays and group them all together.

Besides the given having sex/relations with guys, or if you are a lesbian gals, there is no specific gay lifestyle. Just like there is no specific straight lifestyle.
Depends on the crowd youre hanging out with.

Homosexuals are individuals, they aren't a hive mind. There is no gay lifestyle. Is there a Heterosexual Lifestyle?

obvious : it means living in the ghetto, going clubbing every night, being constantly on E, ghb and special K , going to the gym when you're not in a club, and of course you only wear tank tops and extremely low waist jeans . icon_twisted.gif

And one day at the advanced old age of 28, having your spleen, liver, and a kidney stage a revolt about having to deal with so many chemicals masquerading as letters of the alphabet by dropping out of your gaping backside* one fine day whilst shopping for mimosa fixin's and frozen dinners at the local Piggly-Wiggly... or for tops, seeing their pecker shrivel up and run away. icon_razz.gif

*Thankfully, that doesn't capture the majority of us... though I'd be a-lyin' if I said I didn't like me some muscle boy in a tank and well fitting low rise jeans.

    Or out of them. icon_smile.gif

The gay lifestyle is a term fabricated by homophobics that lump together all bad stereotypes and myths in an effort to make us sound like horrible people so that they have an excuse to hate us and deny us equal liberties. It's based on the misconception that gay people choose to be that way.

I agree in general, but gay guys who tend to be attracted to the scene do tend to behave in a certain way. The gay lifestyle is normally used to define people who only hang out in gay neighborhoods and only go to gay bars/clubs. These people do tend to be more promiscuous. This is by no means the norm, but to me this is the gay lifestyle.

Just live your life, it's not a 'gay lifestyle', not a 'straight lifestyle'- it's just 'your lifestyle'. I find that I am not a lot like most other gay people. I am also not like most straight people. I'm just me.

This nails it. Religious right-wingers will often use "those who engage in the gay lifestyle" - but what they're thinking, as might as well be saying, is "PERVERTS."
