Kings Of Leon Vs. 'Glee': Nathan Followill FIRES BACK At Ryan Murphy In Homophobic Rant

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/26/kings-of-leon-vs-glee-nathan-followill-fires-back-at-ryan-murphy-in-homophobic-rant_n_814351.html

Ugh this shit is getting out of hand. I'm sensitive to most Gay related issues, but this is ridiculous.

    What Nathan said:

The 'Glee' vs. Kings of Leon rivalry just grew serious.

A number of months ago, the rock band declined to allow the FOX series 'Glee,' about a high school choir, to cover its songs in a future episode. 'Glee' creator Ryan Murphy, in a feature in The Hollywood Reporter published Wednesday, hit out at the band.

Here's how Nathan Followill, the drummer of the band of brothers, replied via Twitter: "Dear Ryan Murphy, let it go. See a therapist, get a manicure, buy a new bra. Zip your lip and focus on educating 7yr olds how to say fuck."

Murphy is openly gay, and the show deals with many issues faced by homosexual students in high school.

Realizing how his comments could be seen, Followill later tweeted: "I'm sorry 4 anyone that misconstrued my comments as homophobic or misogynistic. I'm so not that kind of person. I really do apologize."

Ugh commence all the anti- gay hate filled comments that will follow because of this especially on 4chan, reddit, imdb forums, ETC

We cant be so sensitive. these little things are what makes people believe in a Gay Agenda.

Nathan Followill [edit LOL I mean RYAN MURPHY] is a faggot and has created a faggot show and I have to endure listening to faggot GLEE remixes of pop songs when I go to gay bars. How is this an issue that a straight dude called him out? icon_lol.gif

FYI repost. This is a thread somewhere in All Things Gay.

Nathan is the band member of Kings of Leon - not the show creator of Glee.

Regardless, your post was tactless and vile. Using disparaging and derogatory words should be shunned. Just because we are gay does not mean that we give those words a different meaning.

I guess it wouldn't be an issue for someone who is obviously so comfortable using the term "faggot." There seems to be quite a few of you out there who think it's harmless...though perhaps that's suggestive of the fact that some of you should be treated like "faggots," and the rest of us should be treated with respect.

    Just sayin'!

I think the problem I have with the comments is that this guy obviously equates being gay with being feminine. Sure, oversensitivity can go too far at times...however who is in the wrong here: those of you who obviously like the band and will excuse their comments regardless, or others who are gay who resent the implication that being gay means we are regarded as feminine?

And for the record, I would be totally for the comments if he'd left it at this: "Dear Ryan Murphy, let it go!" He could've followed it up by saying he thinks "Glee" is lame, their band isn't interested, and Murphy should just get over himself!

Indeed, I'd be wholeheartedly supportive of those comments.

But no...instead he strokes the age old prejudice that being gay means you're effeminate.

However all in all, I will say this: it is time to get over it now. He clarified his thoughts...apologized to those who may have been offended...and the band doesn't want to have their music featured on "Glee."

Time to get over it Ryan Murphy...there's plenty of other bands and musicians who want the residual attention being featured on "Glee" will provide!

I am gay and I give FAGGOT my own meaning because I don't let people fuck with my head by using that word. Up until I was 16 when I heard someone say that word I immediately got scared and got ready to bolt. Then I started using it. On a rare occasion someone will say "faggot" and I won't even be aware of it because it's in my quotidian language. One time two punk teenagers were calling me a faggot over and over again because they saw me hug a guy. I wasn't even aware of it until the guy I hugged told me about it.

I change the meaning FAGGOT, therefore FAGGOT changes my reaction. I win. You do not dictate to ME what words YOU think should hurt me. Now stop playing a victim and start using the word faggot, you little faggot.

Actually, what I'm saying is you cheapen yourself by choosing to associate yourself with the term...and I'm suggesting that you and people like you, who openly tolerate it, deserve to be treated like inferiors because of that.

The sad reality is that you are ultimately worth more than this...but hey, I'm not being paid to convince you one way or another...and you like arguing just a little too much for me to take too great an interest in trying to convince you that you should have more self respect.

So, do what you want...but just remember that simply because you'll tolerate it, it doesn't mean others will just because they are gay!

You cheapen the fact that I'm using faggot against it's original term, turning it into a funny cheap word, taking away it's negative connotations. You just want to preserve it. You are cheapening yourself because you are allowing that word to create an environment that makes others feel inferior. Stop it. Bad faggot.

The sad reality is you are ultimately not understanding the human ability to shift the change of the meaning of words. But hey, I'm not being paid to teach you linguistics one way or another....and I like arguing so much it seems like you know you've given up on debating already. icon_wink.gif

Ya know, this part makes sense. I understand that some gays will get offended. But if they hear "faggot" from me more than some homophobe, they'll start to associate that word with a homosexual who uses it and not a homophobe who uses it. I am doing you a favor homeboy. You're welcome.icon_biggrin.gif

We did the same in my old circle of gay friends. We used the equivalent of "faggot" in Spanish to mean "handsome". So if a guy was hot (gay or straight) he was a faggot. LOL!

No don't ask how much vodka was needed to bend and redefine the fabric of the universe in such a way.

On the other hand, we had to clarify our inner code a couple of times and yeah, one has to be mindful that not all people react the same way to loaded words.

Yeah, I'm sure the teens who called you a "faggot" over and over again meant it in a nice, good, innocent way, right? Hell, I'm sure if you walked up to them and called them "faggot" right back, I'm sure they'd be so thrilled that they'd just be your best friend!

Listen dude, whatever works for you and others...have at it. Only, when the time comes when someone really is talking down to you, understand that you contributed to that by way of tolerating hate speech!

    Peace!

Followill's comments were a bit homophobic and spewing of stereotypes. Get a manicure, buy a bra?? WTF was that about? I'm the first to say pick and choose your arguments but this part of his comments OBVIOUSLY were referring to Ryan Murphy being Gay. Why even go there...Really?

Had I been as intelligent as I am now they would have been frustrated over the fact that I use the word faggot, leaving them pondering what other words to call me since faggot had no impact. Obviously you still don't get it.

In fact when I started calling straight guys in my frat faggot they loved it, and I was friends with most of them. No one ever called me a faggot (to my face). They pretty much knew the word meant nothing to me. Now just imagine how boring that word would be to the homophobic population if the homosexual population started using that word, using the irony to strip if of it's negative connotations? Oh that's right you don't want that. You just want homophobes to use the word faggot.

And don't fuck with me by saying "whatever works for you but you're supporting hate speech." No sir, YOU are supporting hate speech by preserving the hateful intent of a word. And for that reason I call you a faggot one more time: faggot.

Let's be realistic here, the chances of the Gay community taking the word 'faggot', claiming it and removing the negative connotation and power from it is slight to none. Not to mention we'd still have every current homophobic bigot still using the word as an insult. We should spend our energies not on claiming a word or taking the power away from it but rather on working towards Equal and Civil rights for the Gay community. There needs to be some sensitivity to why people are and will continue to be offended by the word, to dismiss that makes you lose your credibility in the argument.

Because you haven't used the word enough. Use it more.

coastguy90814 saidWe should spend our energies not on claiming a word or taking the power away from it but rather on working towards Equal and Civil rights for the Gay community.

This is a claim that I hear in politics way too much, where you assume I'm spending my ENTIRE life trying to shift the meaning of a word, making me unable to fight for civil rights at the same time. In reality both are a possibility. It doesn't take more than 10 brain cells to just use the word faggot instead of playing into the victim and making it affect you.

coastguy90814 saidThere needs to be some sensitivity to why people are and will continue to be offended by the word, to dismiss that makes you lose your credibility in the argument.

I didn't dismiss that people use it in a pejorative way. I said we need to own the word for ourselves and take away it's negative connotation. You dismissed my entire point by:

    1. Stating that homosexuals cannot remove the negative connotation of a word or it's power

    2. Claimed that we can't try to do this because it takes way too much time away from fighting civil rights (false and major fail)

    3. Claimed that because homosexuals cannot remove the negative connotation, and because homosexuals cannot multitask, that they need to be sensitive about the word faggot.

    4. Came to the conclusion that I lost credibility because you failed to come up with a cohesive counter argument.

The reason this story is an embarrassment is because it is not a genuine instance of homophobia. It is simply a celebrity quarrel, marketed as homophobic because the feud is between a straight man and gay man. The Huffingtonpost title was extremely sensationalistic and distasteful.

I don't even think the Kings of Leon guy knows of Murphy's sexuality so to assume that the KOL guy is anti-gay simply because he insulted a gay man is not a genuine instance of homophobia, but a false accusation that wont do good for Followill's reputation.

It's funny how Ryan Murphy is acting like a baby because he didn't get his way and claims KOL is anti-gay, yet Murphy constantly portrays gay males in the Media as an extreme caricaturistic stereotype. Murphy needs to apologize to Followill not the other way around.

It will make it harder for people to take anti-gay Bigotry seriously if stuff like this persists.

Trust me this is coming from a person with extremely thin skin and hyper sensitive in regards to gay related issues, but this is not an issue of being anti-gay at all, just petty insults being thrown back and forth.
