Tore bicep, surgery...time to rebuild...ideas

    Hey guys!! This is my first forum topic. Thought it was about time I participated than sit on the sidelines.

    Here's the deal.

    I tore my right bicep nearly in half. Had surgery, been on my road to recovery.

    I was out of the gym for awhile. Now it's time to go back. I'm thinking positive as this is my chance to "start again" with my routine.

    I'm looking for any fresh, new ideas for workout routines you guys may have. I can do the gym 4x week for about 60-90 min.

    Yeah, I'm going light and easy on the weights, but this will make me work through my sets at a nice, even pace and work on form. So I have a chance to start some new "good" habits.

    Anybody got a kickass routine to share as I start rebuilding myself from the ground up?

    A complete tear of the bicep takes time to recover. I assume it was torn at the proxial aponeurosis attachment? When was the re-attachment?

    The body repairs itself from an injury first with scaffolding the site with fibers, and this does not matter if it is a broken bone, torn muscle, etc. Then the body replaces the fibers witht he tissue it is supposed to be. It does not always do a 100% good job, and there can be some remaining fibers, which will mature and change composition into a diferent type of fiber that is very stiff.

    That is why there is a reason a fractured bone, even after union, is not allowed to weight bear, because what you got there inbetween the broken bones are not yet ossious tissue (or bone) but just fiber. You weight bearin on it, you will break it again.

    Similary, if a fiber is not replaced into a muscle fiber after a tear and it was let to become a matured fiber, which is not parallel to eht muscle fibers, but sticky, stiff, and criss corssed in disoriented fashione, and it will be like putting super glue in the middle of an elastic band... The tough fiber is not contracile in quality and the muscle activity can cause new micro tears around the site of the original injury, causing more fibers to form, hence, scared down...

    However, if you try to exercise or even do soft tissue work when the fibers are just layed down and the muscle fibers not yer replaced, you will tear it again too, and undo the surgeons work!

    So it is a balance. Your orhto will tell yo you can do FULL ADLs within 3 to 6 months. That is just that, only ADL's (activities of daily living.) Not atheltic activities... Some of my patients who train with weights did not go back to training until after more than 6 to 8 months of bicep rupture repair...

    You may want to get some soft tissue work done after more than 6 months to make sure the fiber do not stick and mature into disorganized manner, causing future injuries.

    Lighter weight, partial range, controlled manner, good woram up, good form, and NEVER do any kind of rebond (concentric during a eccentric phase, or trying to "save" a bad negative motion during a lift.)
