Interval Running...great way to boot metabolism?

    I've recently been told that interval running helps to boost metabolism...so I've started sprinting for a minute and walking for a mintue on the treadmill (for about 20 intervals)...any thoughts on this? or am i wasting my time?

    It's called HIIT (high intensity interval training) and is supposed to be good for boosting metabolism. Heart rate has to get to 85-90% of your max HR for your age for it to be effective.

    I do it for 20 minutes after a weight workout, and 30 minutes when I don't do weights.

    I know Interval training is used to increase your average running speed. It's something I and many of my friends who do running races or triathlons incorporate into our training regiment.

    As for boosting your metabolism. I would think any type of high energy, high intensity workout would raise it. Anything that increases your caloric burn rate, over time, will increase you resting metabolism.

    Though, to maximise the results, I would suggest you to reduce the sprint time to 30 seconds and make it more intense, and transform the "walking time" into slow jogging time (and you can maintain it at 1 min, or extend it to 1min30).

    If you can actually sprint for a minute long, then I'd say you're not doing HIIT right. You should get at the point you just can't go on after 30 seconds; run like your life depended on it !

    You my friend are not wasting your time! Good luck and if you're looking to boost metabolism, don't forget circuit training, strength training and engaging your big muscle groups.
