http://www.usnews.com/opinion/blogs/peter-roff/2011/02/09/rick-scotts-florida-budget-a-tea-party-dream

The state’s current budget, enacted under Republican-turned-independent Charlie Crist, puts total spending for the year at $70.4 billion dollars. Scott has proposed cutting that, turning a budget that spends $65.9 billion in 2011 and $63.3 billion in 2012—a sizeable cut by most any standards. He also proposes to cut taxes by $4 billion over two years, which is also a considerable amount, considering Florida is one of the few states left without a state income tax. Included in those cuts is a plan to reduce the business tax from 5.5 percent to 3 percent as a first step toward completely phasing it out by 2018, and a $1.4 billion cut in property taxes over two years. [...]

All together, Scott has proposed an ambitious plan that puts the taxpayers’ interests ahead of the special interests, especially those within state government itself. It’s the kind of budget that the Tea Party Nation can get excited about—making it a model for what other reform-minded governors may want to do in their states. It’s clear that Scott not only got the message about what voters wanted in 2010, he’s acting on it. The mandate they gave was not to better manage the welfare state; it was to winnow it down.

If he’s successful, it almost assuredly gets him on the short list for vice president in 2012 or, depending on the outcome of that election, for president in 2016.

southbeach1500 saidYep, so far I'm pretty pleased with our new Governor here in Florida.

I only wish the clowns up in Washington DC would do some similar bold budget cutting.

I agree lets cut Corp. Welfare.

And have a lookey-loo at the crazed liberal media reporter who wrote this blowjob of an op-ed without once mentioning the harm these cuts will do to school children ($700 cut per student).

Peter Roff is a contributing editor at U.S. News & World Report. A former senior political writer for United Press International, he is currently a senior fellow at the Institute for Liberty and at Let Freedom Ring, a non-partisan public policy organization. His writing has also appeared on Fox News' Fox Forum.

Now if one of us posted a similar op-ed by say Paul Krugman, SB and Riddler would be screaming about how op-eds are not real news, US News is not a reliable source and it wasn't enough cuts anyway. icon_rolleyes.gif

If you truly believe that each student will be receiving $700 less in educational value, you are woefully naive about how money filters down from the state coffers through the multitude of departments, agencies and others entities that provide absolutely no value to the education consumers (the students) whatsoever.

BTW... why aren't you also screaming about how grandma will be thrown into the gutter and forced to eat cat food?

I didn't say "value" I said "$700." I actually don't believe that the primary issue with public education is money, but taking such a huge chunk is bound to hurt and possibly reverse the progress made by Florida's public schools under Jeb Bush.

Let's see how when these "cuts" start showin' up in the classroom and on the streets how USNews reports it then

Why do you THINK Ricky Rich unveiled his plan in Eustis FL instead of Tallahassee?

There wouldn't be the usual press corps and governmental groups waiting there to ask THE RIGHT questions about specifics in his "wish" list

Eustis FL ........................... when you smell a rat? ........... it usually IS a rat icon_wink.gif
[cite]southbeach1500 said...And you have absolutely no proof whatsoever to back up that statement.
having "no proof whatsoever" has never stopped SB from making up "facts" out of thin air! icon_rolleyes.gif
