What to do when you can't ?

    I have Multiple sclerosis and I have a problem with a lot of physical activities.. Sometimes the legs just don't work, sometimes the arms just dont work, and I have balance when doing spinning or bicycling. Can anyone suggest what I can do. I lost over 100 lbs in the last 4 years and now weight abt 168. The weight wasn't lost the hard way ( diet, exercise). I had gastric bypass. I'm trying to maintain the current weight so I am looking for exercises to tone myself up. I will never be in as great shape as most members on this site, but I want to try my best.... Looking for suggestions. Also looking for a personal trainer in the Johnstown, PA area or neraby.     Try a pilates ring. You can use it on any part of your body and the squeezing and contracting strengthens and tones the muscles.

    Sitting or standing.

    I'm really not informed enough to be offering you advice on what exercises would be safe/appropriate for someone in your position but I do know there are some trainers that have training/experience in dealing with clients that suffer from muscular, auto-immune (lupus, can sometimes induce fibromyalgia) or neurological disorders. Not sure how likely you are to find someone like that in Johnstown, PA, but it would be well worth it to keep your eyes peeled for someone with that expertise.

    as mentioned above, the pilates ring, the exercise bands in different thicknesses....you can do just about anything with the bands, (and a Swiss/balance ball) that you can do with weights/cables. Also, get couple of dumbbells in different weights. You can do a lot of dumbbell and kettleball stuff sitting. The balance ball should help strengthen core, etc. that might be affected by your MS. You could also purchase one of the aerobic step units to use and work on some leg strength on days that you aren't having difficulties with your legs.
    Definitely check out the personal trainers that have certifications that are specifically for people with challenges. Some of the certifications have multiple certifications dealing with different populations (including rehab, seniors, etc.)
    NASM has 2-3 additional certifications trainers can study and get certified in, ISSA has many...ACSM...those are like some of the top certification programs with special cert'ns. And, someone with a kinesiology or exercise science degree.
    Check with your gym or word-of-mouth.
    I'm certified through NASM as a trainer, but don't have the additional certifications. So, I can only give you some generic things to do to start.

    The most recent clinical trial evaluating the role of exercise in MS patients concluded that "greater benefit may be associated with higher-intensity exercise, but this may be less well tolerated". Fatigue tends to set in earlier in those with MS, but the trade-off may be worth a try. This article reviews physical activity in MS.

    Dude! I just want to say congratulations on the weight loss irrespective of how you achieved it AND two thumbs up for your motivation! I have many patients with MS and I see them on their good days and some not so good days and then there are the days where no one sees them. I am overwhelmed with you positiveness and desire to push back against your physical situation.
