I never understood Ms Jones when I was growing up, she just seemed freakishly bizzare( didn't mix w/ my motown ears) Now it all makes sense!

I was terrified of her when I was a kid! icon_eek.gif

My brother could show a picture of her (which was in Jet's magazine - I know I'm dating myself, lol) and I'd run to my bed. icon_redface.gif

That said, she was a timeless artist that was ahead of her time. You can definitely see her art has influenced today's artists and those after her.

For what it's worth, sometimes looking at Lady Gaga and her 'artistic styling' makes me run too! icon_lol.gif

I love Grace Jones. She was 'out there' years before it was even cool. She appeared on a very controversial show on Italian TV called Stryx on RAI 2 in 1978. The show also featured the always controversial and fascinating Amanda Lear.

I also loved her in the movie Boomerang with Eddie Murphy. She played the role of French model/socialite/party girl Strangé.

I mostly remember her from Conan the Destoyer movie.
I love this scene. Oh, Grace, if only it were that simple. lol

This woman has talent to burn, and she's the real deal. From her Hollywood Bowl show a couple of years ago:

    From her recent album:

To think she's over 60 now, and still going strong. I can't imagine Ga Ga will still be around in 38 years - her act is getting tired and repetitive already.

fucking best. i dont even get the lady gaga comparisons cuz like in reality grace jones never pandered to any audience and her wackiness or whatever didnt ever feel contrived or like it was meant to shock middle america. i dont think she really gave a fuck who liked her or if she got famous and she was successful because of that not despite it. and almost 40 years later she is still weird as fuck and souful and original and not some famewhoring leech desperate to be in the spotlight. who can knock her? everything she does has been cool. even the shitty movies shes been in have been smart and awesome - straight to hell, vamp..fuckin boomerang! she has the same thing that klaus nomi has which is you can listen to their records and be like wow this is really good and weird and then see them performing and be like holy fuck what am i watching. lady gaga and madonna dont have that. the only way they are similar is gay guys sweat their nuts. its like comparing liberace and neil patrick harris.

Here is a link to a hilarious interview with Grace over 20 years ago. Lots of funny Grace stuff but especially at the end when she talks about a distasteful gift like if someone gave you a dildo, the interviewer says especially if it tastes bad and Grace laughs hysterically. She is an original, one of a kind and so so cool without even trying. She must have so many stories to tell about drugs, sex and partying. I am glad she survived it all

She is truly the original weirdo/bad ass! Not only were her songs good (cough cough Lady Gaga) but she was pushing issues of gender and sexuality in the 70's and 80's. Now while I like Gaga, I've never felt her performances were conceptually that complex (just compare it to Jones' Slave to the Rhythm) unlike Jones who, though not alone in her creations (her chief collaborator's name escapes me now) was trying to say something beyond the obvious. Maybe Gaga will become the new Grace Jones, but it's too soon to say. Nonetheless, Grace Jones is fantastic!
