    Whats going on over there?

Reuters: Third of Russians think sun spins round Earth: pollIn a survey released this week, 32 percent of Russians believed the Earth was the center of the Solar system; 55 percent that all radioactivity is man-made; and 29 percent that the first humans lived when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth.

"It's really quite amazing," spokeswoman Olga Kamenchuk said of the survey that polled 1,600 people across Russia's regions in January, with a 3.4-percent margin of error.

"All of them (the questions) were absolutely obvious... the data speaks of the low levels of education in the country."

However, people tend to forget what they have been taught at school if it is not part of daily use, she added: "I wonder whether our colleagues in other countries would find any different."

The study also found that women were more likely than men to believe the scientific fallacies.

What do you mean by "Soviet Russia"? Russian SSR that was part of the former USSR, or the Russian Federation that exists today?

I'm really glad we're not the most ignorant people on earth...because we're all equally ignorant. It's like Obama saying that we have no better ally than France. icon_lol.gif

icon_biggrin.gif I was being silly, quoting a line from Family Guy.

Some of us just happen to be more equal than others icon_wink.gificon_lol.gif

Joking aside, perhaps the Russians ignorance is driven by religion as well. I wonder how many of those that believe the Earth is at the center are ardent Orthodox?

I think the Russians are WAY smarter than us.
    1. From the perspective of an almost infinite universe, the Earth is the center of the universe. (well, maybe not the solar system)
    2. Not all radioactivity is man-made, but much of it around Chernobyl is.
    3. Even the Russians believe in evolution, even though mammals were just tiny critters when the dinosaurs were around. They had the idea right, just not the timeframe. icon_lol.gif

The sad thing is that US responses would probably not have been much better. There are people here who can't locate Canada on a map, and who think that modern humans coexisted with the dinosaurs.

I know it's disappointing to find out it wasn't like The Flintstones...

The tortoise and alligator have been around unchanged for tens of millions of years, and tortoises have existed in a form easily recognizable to us for a couple of hundred million years. They are reptiles and look like dinosaurs of some type, so I am going stretch reality just a little and claim that I visit dinosaurs at the zoo every year. As such, not only did modern man coexist with dinosaurs millions of years ago, but I happily coexist with them today.icon_twisted.gif
(I don't need anybody to point out the obvious flaws in my reasoning, I am having fun...)

I'll point out one flaw - tortoises aren't lizards (look up the etymology of dinosaur).icon_smile.gif

Ah, yes. But I said that they are reptiles and look like dinosaurs (this part being subjective.) They are close enough to pass for a dinosaur (if I chose to suspend reality and ignore truth for awhile.)icon_lol.gif
