I don't like cruises anyway, so I don't see this. But if this was the most recent Atlantis cruise, there were local gay clubs that held bon-voyage parties for the passengers quite recently here in Fort Lauderdale.

I don't endorse drug use. But is this quite as bad as he makes it? In any group of Americans, straight or gay, you will find drug use. The author offers very limited anecdotal evidence for a picture that portrays the majority of gay men on cruises as drug-crazed.

Well, I don't go on cruises, as I say. But our gay friends do, and I know for a fact they don't use drugs. Nor would they tolerate being around that sort of rampant thing.

I'm more suspicious of a potentially exaggerating queen (and "porn entrepreneur" rather than a credentialed social commentator or reporter), which seems more the plague in our gay community. Comments from others on the Advocate seem to also question his methodology & conclusions. Comments about cruises you've done from guys here?

The circuit parties have always been notorious for out of control drug use.

Drug use is a problem with gay culture today and has been for a long time.
The root cause is the fact that young gays grow up thinking that marriage and having a family is for straight people only, and being gay is just about partying and pursuing other selfish pursuits and activities that are all about having fun in the here and now.
As more gays grow up thinking that they can get married and have a home and a family with a partner of the same sex, hopefully drug use will stop being such a widespread "normal" part of gay culture.

I believe that to be true. But based on better evidence than this author presents regarding cruises. It's like saying a Ford F-150 proves that US pickups are no good, and I'll demonstrate it by talking about a Chevy Silverado. I'm sorry, but I just don't accept this faulty reasoning on many levels: poor anecdotal evidence regarding cruises themselves, and a failure to prove that cruise ships are an accurate & faithful microcosm of gay life.

This is the sloppiest example of purely opinionated writing. Maybe OK for posts on a social gay site like this one (or maybe not, actually), but not for the Advocate.

Do I believe that many gays are self-loathing, self-defeating and self-destructive? Absolutely. Do I believe it MAY stem from negative societal pressures in certain parts of the world, the US chief among them? Most likely it is a factor, along with perhaps something in our genes that makes us gay in the first place.

But portraying the Atlantis cruise as a drug-crazed romp that's a metaphor for gay problems is just queeny -- plain & simple.

So I'll do ask around if anyone we know went on that cruise, and hear from them personally about this. I wasn't aware of any going this time, but some have in the past.
