Beer targeted at gay men *roll eyes*

So guys I found this article on a local news site here in my home town of Brisbane in Australia. The title made me cringe (A queer beer? Not here!) and I expected the worst, stereotypical assumptions about gay men and the beer they drink. Surprisingly the beer companies pretty much said it was a load of crap and they would never target a beer to gay men, they say it's patronising and it doesn't work. Have a read for yourself, I was quite surprised. Maybe Brisbane isn't as bogan as I thought it was! :-P

I live in brisbane as well but hadn't seen this article. A gay beer sounds completely stupid. Thankfully it seems like a load of crap.

I've never heard of a beer being specifically brewed for gays. But here in the US, some brands heavily advertise to us. One of the most visible is Budweiser, and particularly their Bud Light.

Not only in print, but also in their signs, banners and other promotional material they provide to bars and events. In gay bars that display such things, I almost always will see a lit Bud Light sign on a inside wall, or in their outside window, with a gay rainbow motif. I've even seen Bud Light rainbow tap handles. Below are a bar coaster, and a neon sign (the colors a little weak).

There's a local winery that seems to put a lot more effort into marketing than into winemaking. Their theme is sexual innuendo. Each of the wines has a titillating name, like, "Penetration Cabernet," "Dominatrix Pinot Noir," etc. If nothing else, they make fun gifts.

Anyway, their rose is "Gay Rose."

    From the web site:

    "Feeling Gay? Rose!

Our Rose is light and fruity with a hint of sweetness. Even if you haven't been feeling Gay, this wine could make you change your mind!

    Back Label:
    Bright and flamboyant bouquet
Light and fruity in a fabulous way
    Drink it with pride
    You'll be satisfied
    Gay, the Queen of Rose!"

(I haven't actually tried hanging out at the tasting room and watching who orders it.)

Giving someone a Bud/Bud Light should be considered a crime against humanity (if not good taste) icon_razz.gif

Well, that's another issue. I certainly wouldn't touch a Bud Light myself.

But my point was the beer advertising that targets US gays. There's not a gay brew, but there is a gay market they seek. I wonder if the same happens in Australia?

I can see it being a hit and gay bars/parties/events and other places that cater to the gay crowd and hell if the beer taste good whats the problem?

As for being able to find it at you local bar, let's give it a chance and see what happens, gay is becoming less and less taboo as the years go by and I'm sure if the beer is good there is a number of straight men would not mind ordering one at a bar!

now now, bud light does have its place. try playing beer pong, kings cup, or century club with a quality beer, its likely way to heavy. you need the water-downed stuff for the games.

Svedka is the same as Absolute, only relabeled for a lower price point.

But frankly. in many flavored mixed drinks you lose the vodka brand anyway. Don't waste your money unless you're really tasting the vodka, like in a tonic, or a martini.

No thanks. I think it is stupid to target alcohol towards a specific minority group. I'll be sticking by my old stand-by, trusted drink I love so much-

I thought all beer made guys "gay"?

    Ala....

Him: "Oh, dude. I was so f*ing drunk last night. I didn't know what I was doing."
Me: "You may not have known what you were doing, but you were doing it really well."

(At least for the night and until that awkward slinking out in the morning.)

I loved Zima! I have no problem with a new beer that caters to the gays. As long as the product and ad is not about stereotyping, it shows validation and clout.

And as someone else mentioned, beer makes most every guy gay at some point.
