    Hey everybody,

For a class, I'm writing an essay on gay men who misrepresent themselves on blood donation questionnaires, stating that they've never had intimate contact with another man, so that they can circumvent the (discriminatory) ban placed on them, and donate anyway. So, part of this involves me collecting some real-life data and this is where you guys come in!

I just have a few simple questions that I want to post here and it would mean a lot to me if you responded. Anything you tell me will remain confidential and in my essay I have no intention of mentioning names, locations, etc. Also if you don't want to answer on the public forum, feel free to private message me instead.

Any information you are willing to share would be great so you don't necessarily have to limit your responses to the questions posted below and likewise you don't have to answer all of them.

-Are you a man who has had anal and/or oral sex with another man since 1977?

-What is your HIV status? (If negative, how often do you get tested?)

-Have you ever (lied on the questionnaire and) donated blood since becoming sexually active (with men)?
    How often do you donate?

-If you've donated, what motivates you to donate?

-If you've donated, has any center ever found out you lied on your questionnaire? If so, what were the consequences?

-If you've never donated, why don't you donate? Is the reason related to your sexuality?

-If you don't donate, how do you feel about the ban placed on gay men and how do you feel about other gay men misrepresenting themselves to get around the ban?

-Have you ever received a blood donation?

-Would you be comfortable receiving a blood donation from a member of a risk-risk group for HIV?

Again, don't feel like you have to either 1) limit your responses to these questions or 2) answer all of them or even any of them! haha.

    Thanks guys

    1. Are you a man who has had anal and/or oral sex with another man since 1977?

    Yes

    2. What is your HIV status? (If negative, how often do you get tested?)

HIV negative, tested 4-6 times a year

    3. Have you ever donated blood since becoming sexually active (with men)? How often do you donate?

Nope. Tried once but Blue Cross said I can't because I'm gay...which to them means they think all gays have AIDS.

    4. If you've donated, what motivates you to donate?

    N/A

    5. If you've donated, has any center ever found out you lied on your questionnaire? If so, what were the consequences?

    N/A

    6. If you've never donated, why don't you donate? Is the reason related to your sexuality?

That's exactly right. Because I'm gay they deny my blood.

    7. If you don't donate, how do you feel about the ban placed on gay men and how do you feel about other gay men misrepresenting themselves to get around the ban?

I feel that they should ban Asians from driving, Black people from speaking ebonix, and Muslims from Mosques, because obviously those lead to death just like a homosexual automatically leads to death from AIDS.

    8. Have you ever received a blood donation?

    No

    9. Would you be comfortable receiving a blood donation from a member of a risk-risk group for HIV?

I'd prefer not to know and I'd prefer ALL BLOOD TO BE TESTED after it's donated to ensure that NOTHING is contaminated. But wow this is kind of a "put's you in THEIR shoes" question. I'd feel a bit nervous receiving blood if I knew all gays donated it. I mean at the rate men LIE to me I'm sure they'll lie about their HIV status. I don't trust fags. But I'll trust tests on the blood if it's 100% accurate.

-Are you a man who has had anal and/or oral sex with another man since 1977?

    YES

-What is your HIV status? (If negative, how often do you get tested?)

    Negative.

-Have you ever donated blood since becoming sexually active (with men)? How often do you donate? Yes. Once

-If you've donated, what motivates you to donate?

I didn't know what 'Blood Drive' meant, I was curious, so I checked it out. However, my doctor fills a lot of blood tubes with my blood every so often, I could swear he is selling it on the side.

-If you've donated, has any center ever found out you lied on your questionnaire? If so, what were the consequences?

    I did not lie.

-If you've never donated, why don't you donate? Is the reason related to your sexuality?

That would not be a reason for me to not give blood.

-If you don't donate, how do you feel about the ban placed on gay men and how do you feel about other gay men misrepresenting themselves to get around the ban?

I did not know about a BAN.

-Have you ever received a blood donation?

    No

-Would you be comfortable receiving a blood donation from a member of a risk-risk group for HIV?

(They do not check the donated blood for diseases?)

Again, don't feel like you have to either 1) limit your responses to these questions or 2) answer all of them or even any of them! haha.

    Thanks guys

Thanks guys for your responses. But ZacktheMan, your answers seem slightly contradictory. How were you able to donate blood without lying on your questionnaire that you were not gay?

My character would not let me lie about that.

I do not recall being asked. It was some time ago, perhaps it was before 1977. If so, my response may not be helpful to you.

In any case, I am disease free. I have never been sexually promiscuous. For me, there needs to be friendship and a heart to heart connection and like-minded. A friend who is closer than a brother. The chance of this happening may be quite slim in this day and age. There seems to be a paranoia infiltrating all levels and sections of society. On the other, maybe it is just me who is paranoid icon_wink.gificon_biggrin.gif .

-Are you a man who has had anal and/or oral sex with another man since 1977?
    Yes

-What is your HIV status? (If negative, how often do you get tested?)
    Neg. 3x/year

-Have you ever (lied on the questionnaire and) donated blood since becoming sexually active (with men)?
    How often do you donate?
    No

-If you've donated, what motivates you to donate?
I donated before I had sex with men. I have the rarest blood type, so I thought it was important to donate.

-If you've donated, has any center ever found out you lied on your questionnaire? If so, what were the consequences?
Did not lie. I did not start having anal sex with men until after the last time I donated blood.

-If you've never donated, why don't you donate? Is the reason related to your sexuality?
Stopped donating because I'm not going to limit my life based on their outdated rules.

-If you don't donate, how do you feel about the ban placed on gay men and how do you feel about other gay men misrepresenting themselves to get around the ban?
So what. The blood gets tested. I won't lie, but if someone else wants to...

-Have you ever received a blood donation?
    No.

-Would you be comfortable receiving a blood donation from a member of a risk-risk group for HIV?
If I needed blood, I think there would be more urgent things going on than me worrying about who donated the blood I was getting.
