I often wake up in bed with a long, stabby thing. But what I do have discretely tucked between my side of the bed and the night table, because I think firearms are as much a danger to me in the home as they are to the criminal intruders we get here in Florida, is an aerosol can of hornet killer.
It sprays a concentrated stream out to about 10 feet, and is temporarily blinding in the eyes, similar to mace. In fact, I think it may be technically illegal to use it here for that purpose against someone, but I'll take that chance. It's non-lethal but disabling. In the meantime I'll subdue the intruder by physical means and we'll call the police.
If there are multiple intruders we may have a bigger problem. But as I say, a loaded firearm is dangerous to have around, despite my having taught marksmanship in the Army, and run firing ranges. Indeed, I think that's why I know this. And if taken away from you a weapon can be turned against you, as can a knife.
