It's funny that news like this is being presented now as something fresh. I heard about this probably 6 years ago. The account I heard was that the solar flares would actually be enough to make all satelites go kaput.

icon_eek.gif this is also happening close to the Mayan's 2012 icon_eek.gificon_razz.gif

They said this for last summer and nothing significant happened. Is this how they justify their budget cuts?

I heard about this a couple of months ago.... I hope if authorities believe it is really going to be a challenge for us, that a real wake up call goes out to the major media. Sounds like the kind of thing we need to prepare for....immediately.

That article is old (14 Jun 2010).
However, it's true that NASA is watching the sun closely, and think it "might" be a rather active solar maximum over the next couple years.

One of the implications is that the sun's increased radiation is causing global warming so don't expect this to get much airplay.

Funny you should mention this. There was a small news item in the Weekly Magazine stating scientists actually miscalculated the end of the world according to the Mayan callandar by 50 to 100 years from now. Of course... good news doesn't sell so.....

http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/blogs/climateqa/has-the-sun-been-more-active-in-recent-decades-and-could-it-be-responsible-for-some-global-warming/Scientists are still debating whether or not the Sun’s activity increased during the latter half of the 20th century, but even the highest estimates of activity can’t account for the warming observed since about 1950.
    ...
Regardless, even when scientists assume that solar activity is increasing based on proxy data and the satellite record, they can’t account for all of the warming observed at the end of the twentieth century. Climate models can only reproduce the warming observed since 1950 when a rise in greenhouse gases is built into the system.

The better news is that scientists have estimated that there are more than 150 million planets in the Milky Way Galaxy. If 10% of their inhabitants are gay as they are on Earth, look out!

But it is bigger and much more important news now, because back then nobody had the thought and worry about how it would affect Grindr. There might be some really pissed off queens after these solar storms bring the wrong satellite down.
