Equality Michigan is excited to announce that Motor City Pride will be honoring its heritage by holding the 2011 festival in Hart Plaza, Detroit, Michigan on June 4 and 5, 2011. Twenty-five years ago, the first pride march in Michigan was held in Downtown Detroit; we will celebrate that march by bringing the festival to Detroit. There is something truly energizing, exciting and empowering about holding Motor City Pride at such a prominent location as Hart Plaza because it solidifies the notion of LGBT people as contributing members of our larger community. It also demonstrates the strength, vitality and unity of our community within the collective fabric of Southeastern Michigan.
In addition to celebrating our roots, Hart Plaza will allow the festival to expand to a two-day format, which will let us to double our offerings of activities and entertainment. The stages and dance area will present a greater variety of offerings to meet the interests and needs of our diverse community. Programming will be increased by bringing back the youth zone and providing expanded family activities. Hart Plaza also offers areas for friends and families to picnic while enjoying the music and the scenic views of the Detroit river front. The annual June festival has been designed for open-ended appeal by our diverse community.
