RuPaul's Drag Race Season 3

  • Feb 27, 2011 3:33 PM GMT
Who has been following RuPaul's Drag Race Season 3? Any takes on who will be crowned the next Drag Superstar. I am currently stationed in NC and is just so happens that Stacy Layne Matthews goes to the club that I go to in Fayetteville, NC. icon_biggrin.gifIt's funny because I saw her two weeks ago at the club and she's playing it off like she wasn't on the show (of course she's under contract of secrecy). She came in with a zip up sweater, some sweat pants, and a purse. I laughed so hard because she is really trying NOT to draw attention to herself. icon_lol.gifBut everyone still wants to blow her up and ask her questions. I love the fact that I am being teased with what is gonna happen next on the show. icon_wink.gifI was proud of her for winning this past week's challenge on the snatch game. ANY THOUGHTS ON THE SHOW GUYS?icon_question.gif

RuPaul is interesting, honey. But I haven't watched him and his sisters lately.

This is the only show I look forward to. There are some contestants that look great on the runway, but Shangela is the only one that turns it out every week, imo. The others really lack in charisma during the challenges. Ru is still making her work for it, tho.

Shangela is pretty good, but I'd put my money on Manilla and Raja in the top three. I also really like Yara Sofia and Delta, but I don't know how far they'll make it.

Of course Raja and Manilla were frontrunners and stood out from the beginning, but I am falling asleep watching anything they do besides the runway, esp Raja. Her humour just doesn't appeal to me. Manilla needs to BLEND that face!

Im a Drag Race fan since the beginning and each season has it's standouts. This season I love Delta and her personality(the funniness not cattiness.lol), Raja Do turn it out on the main stage but elsewhere not so much, Yara seems good but she needs to show more of Everything if she wants to make it and Manilla has a down to earth persona and overall good stage presence. Those are my picks

P.S Stacy was Amazing on The Snatch Game icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I was really happy Stacy won the challenge and I'm glad she didn't give up. If you watch the half-hour show afterwards, the queens really get vicious. Raja and Delta are starting to get on my nerves and are quickly losing their appeal. Delta looked like a divorced middle-aged realtor on the runway.

Stop it. Now that you mentioned it,it looks like it and I did see Untucked. What Raja said about Shangela was also true, "If you cant say anything nice, dont".

I recorded it and we'll watch it tonight - hope it's good! I have a gym buddy from PR and he said he's going to tutor me in Spanish - mine is so rusty (even though 1/2 the people I know speak Spanish).

I like Shangela's personality, but the assessment of last week's queen's was right. She's not good at putting herself together on her own. She needs too much help from everyone around her where the others seem to have their shit together.

And when she went after Raja for her Tyra? She was WAY too insistent on her being awful, that she was clearly very insecure about her performance. Because as much as Raja wasn't exactly Tyra, when has Tina ever repeatedly uttered the phrase "Haleloo?"

I think Shangela will stay on for awhile because of her over bearing personality, but she doesn't have the stuff to be America's next drag superstar.

And P.S. aside from the "tour" after the show and the money, what does the winner get? She doesn't get her own show. If anything, her booking fee goes up about as much as the rest of the other girls' does. It's kindof like America's Next Top Model. I haven't seen any of those "winners" ever again.

  • Mar 02, 2011 5:34 PM GMT
I respect your honest opinion there bro! I have watched America's Next Top Model all the way back to cycle 2 (for some reason just couldn't boil up to watching cycle 1 with Adrianne Curry).

I feel the same way about the winners not receiving really much any publicity after the show. Some of the earlier winners in ANTM went from modeling into acting. I am thinking WTF. You girls got $100,000 contracts to represent millions of girls out there and you leave it all for acting? Maybe they realized the horrible truth about modeling and left while they still could. Or are doing everything they can to survive and make money anyway that they can. Eva Pigford (Eva the Diva) was always my favorite and she went from modeling into acting. Currently on the "Young and the Restless" if I am not mistaken. There have been some horrible reality checks about ANTM and the winners picked in the previous cycles. For not really going to far in their modeling careers except some "national" representations. That's why cycle 15 went a little step further and gave an "ultimate" prize win of representation from Vogue Italia and some modeling opportunities in Europe....that way the winner may receive both national and international representations.

But anyways, back to the original focus. I agree that the winning Queens really don't end up with their own shows after their win. Of course some more expensive booking costs for drag performances at clubs and what not. Or maybe another appearance in Drag U (maybe). But that's about it. I wasn't too big of a fan for Tyra Sanchez (season 2 winner of the drag race). Every single thing that came out of her mouth was "oh my son" this and "oh my son" that and was gonna use the $10,000 to start a life with her son. I'm like really!?! 10 grand will really get you going with your son....LIKE REALLY!?! Maybe she should have waited for season 3 of the drag race to put an effort at winning $70,000. Maybe she could give her son a better future. Where is the child's mother honestly?

I am rather disappointed with this week's episode of the drag race. I think all of the girls failed at the main challenge of designing "couture" outfits. Some of the ideas were pretty out there with their designs. But when I think couture, I think over the top in eleganza. At least after watching ANTM (America's Next Top Model) long enough, I understand it to be high fashion. Raja gets the upper hand in fashion and modeling because she (of course) was one of the make-up artists from ANTM. You saw her with longer hair in the earlier seasons dolling the women up for their photo shoots. If anyone saw cycle 6 of ANTM in an episode where the girls are told they are going to Thailand for their abroad location. Raja (known as Sutan) comes out dressed and looking like Tyra Banks saying that she's Ty (Thai). What a queen!

I don't see how Stacy Layne Matthews could fall flat with her outfit design. Pants!?! That was so NOT couture. I understand her wanting to be "different" from the other girls because they were all had skirts. If she wanted to be high-fashion with it, she should have added a train to the pants portion of her outfit.

    http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://intheircloset.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/balmain-fall-2009-silver-strapless-mini-dress-black-train.jpg&imgrefurl=http://intheircloset.com/category/designer/balmain/page/5/&usg=__C29fwhN7fQS8-QlFSHW8nRmYgBM=&h=560&w=370&sz=71&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=KTXODEqqRHXo5M:&tbnh=138&tbnw=100&ei=dnduTaSCDpK4sAOX9rzOCw&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpant%2Bdress%2Bwith%2Ba%2Btrain%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1600%26bih%3D727%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=127&vpy=60&dur=1932&hovh=276&hovw=182&tx=116&ty=300&oei=dnduTaSCDpK4sAOX9rzOCw&page=1&ndsp=44&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0

Copy and paste the link. That is an idea of a train for the outfit Stacy could have saved herself with. Although the outfit in this photo has a skirt, I am sure you would understand my concept. Even Stacy's first outfit in the first episode (the red Christmas gown designed with Xmas supplies and clothes from a thrift store) looked more high fashion than the one she created in this weeks episode. Maybe the train on her outfit would have probably saved her from elimination and sent Shangela home for lack of designing on her own. I like Shangela but....meh....I don't know. I don't get it. Maybe it's her determination that's keeping her there.

As for the untucked episode. I am gonna have to agree with Raja's reasoning on Shangela. Rupaul expects the winner of the show to show charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. Shangela still has a lot to learn about being unique. I can see that several of her "already made" outfits show uniqueness. But when it comes to making her own outfit she has to ask for help in other directions.

I couldn't help but root for Stacy so much. Only because I am stationed in North Carolina and I go to the clubs that she performs at. I was still in Iraq when she apparently "disappeared" quietly and told noone where she had gone off to. She came back earlier this year and everyone's wondering where the hell she went. Once you saw the show you found out. In fact, 3 weeks ago I went to the club and she showed up. Bless her heart I laughed so hard because she came in wearing a zip up sweater, sweat pants, a pair of sneakers and a purse in hand. She was trying really hard to keep a low profile. But everyone was up in her business wanting to know what happens in the next episode (of course she can't say a thing for her signed contract of secrecy). Poor girl. I got to talk to her personally and was so happy to see she didn't let the show get the best of her.

    SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 7!

I hear you. My read on Tyra Sanchez is that she's wasn't a bitch, she was just stupid. Pretty, but stupid. Well taught and taken care of, but stupid. I feel like they made her the "winner" because they knew JuJu and Raven would make better TV for Drag U.

Yeah, after last night's episode, I'm completely over Shangela. Raja was almost completely right in her reading of her. Shangela keeps insisting on people being "real." And I've run into this with other people I've known who are "trying to keep it real." Shangela's idea of "keeping it real" is: what she thinks about the situation is the absolute truth. And if someone disagrees with her or tries to argue with her they're not being "real." Even when she was calling out Stacy for not "sticking up for her." What if Stacy had the same opinions about Shangela as Delta and Raja did? Then sticking up for her regardless of what she thought would have been fake, or "NOT REAL!"

    And so, Shangela cries.

So, yes. I agree with Raja. Shangela needs to figure out herself and get her shit together, and then yes, she will be great. But right now, her lack of know-how and skill, and her insecurity are getting the best of her.

But ultimately, it's about TV. ANTM, Drag Race, Idol, and every other competition show, are about getting viewers. And they do that with drama, and sob stories, and intrigue, and conflict. Drag Race knows their audience. We want to see the bitchiness, and we wanna see people put in their place. So Shangela will stay on as long as she doesn't COMPLETELY fuck up a challenge.

So as I am team Raja, and I know she's reading this (LOL) I will say that she's coming across as too hard and a know it all. And honestly, she has the right. She's been in the scene for a long time, and she knows how amazing she is. But no matter how fierce you are, if you have no vulnerability, you won't have anyone on your side. And you ultimately won't win.

Can't wait to see what happens. icon_smile.gif

I agree that the winner doesn't necessarily benefit more than other girls, but unlike ANTM, I think the exposure still has the potential to transform their careers. I saw Tyra perform in Vancouver during pride, and she really was amazingly put together. I also follow Jujubee, and she is constantly traveling all over the states to perform. A couple others from season 2 have recorded music... not saying it's great but no doubt being on the show has allowed them to do what they love better than before. ANTM girls just fade into obscurity with no modeling career to support themselves.

I'm a Raja fan myself and while I think Shangela is a nice person she was getting on my nerves with this "Keep it real" nonsense. Raja and Delta Work put her in her place.

People were trying to be real with her and she wasn't trying to hear it because the truth hurts and she knew "keeping it real" backfired on her. I'm rooting for Raja and Delta because they keep it real.

Delta's accusation of Stacy wanting sympathy for being heavy. PLEASE! Stacy was holding herself just fine. I spoke to Stacy personally a few weeks back and she says the producers needed an angle to work with on for each of the girls. They saw Stacy one day being quiet and timid and so they've been using that against her ever since. So all of America is thinking Stacy is the quiet country girl from the cornfields. She also mentions that in the untucked episodes there would be people hiding behind the sofa's and couches whispering to the girls and telling them "hey why don't you say this" or "say that" just so the girls could get rowdied up.

But anyways, Delta Work is the one who is wanting sympathy because she is FAT and OLD. She confesses it with Raja in earlier episodes that she is older than the other girls. Delta is the one using her age and weight as a crutch for reasoning. And the fact that she was bottom two twice already says something. But, whatever. If only Mariah knew the words to the DAMN song, Delta would have been gone by now.

You're right KENCARSON. Raja has reason behind her arguments. She does honestly keep things real. And Raja is completely right, her personality is mean sometimes and she tries her hardest not to bring it out on others. But if someone starts a fire around Raja, she is just gonna raise the temperature more and then come out in the end as the "bad" person. I am rooting for Raja too...just not her mouth. Maybe the people hiding behind the couches are telling her to do something. icon_eek.gificon_lol.gif That's the only way TV shows are gonna make their money. They need the viewers and the reviewers. So they will find every angle possible to make these girls vulnerable.
