England wicket keeper Steve Davies becomes first professional cricketer to publicly announce he is gay

While his peers have known for some time, England wicket keeper Steve Davies has used the internet to publicly announce he is gay.

Davies, who was left out of the World Cup squad to go to the sub-continent, used video interviews on The Sun and Daily Telegraph websites to become the country's first professional cricketer to publicly announce he is gay.

With him and Gareth Thomas, it seems that *maybe* professional sports in the UK are being eroded as "purely straight" spaces.

    Very good for him!

This definitely cheered up a grey Monday commute for me. It's great that he's done it at the start of his career and hopefully has many years ahead as a top player and role model.

He may not realise it, but somewhere he (and to be fair the rest of his squad) has probably just made a young gay cricketer's life so much better in showing that you can be world class and gay. I hope the support that the rest of the team has given him is something that others can learn from/replicate.

Looking forward to a Premier League footballer doing the same...

Few sports can be called 'gay', least of all cricket I'd have thought.

Cricket is full of plenty of gay innuendo though:

"facing a couple of bouncers down at the member's end"

    "getting caught behind"

    etc

And of course classic Brian Johnson commentary:

"the bowler's Holding, the Batsman's Willey"

    and

"There's Neil Harvey standing at leg slip with his legs wide apart, waiting for a tickle"

In all seriousness though, this is so good for aspiring gay sportsmen, not just in Cricket.

for the record, Neil Harvey was, and still is, an asshole.

And after today's performance, they really really really should have taken him to the World Cup. Will be shaking my head the entire weekend over the way Prior got out.
