What do you think are some of the best or most important gay-themed movies ever made? Not necessarily your personal favorites, but the ones that really made an impact.

Why are there few inspirational action/adventure/thriller films starring gay heroes who kick ass in the U.S.? I know France and Japan are ahead.

In Quebec, I'd say Crazy, definitely.

On a larger scale, Brokeback Moutain wasn't (in my opinion) a masterpiece, but had major impact.

Was that the one with the guy who idolised David Bowie? I really liked that.

There's a lot of decent 'queer cinema' films out but unfortunately finding them is liking searching for a needle in a gaystack - most gay films are pretty dire to the point of being unwatchable and just filled with cliches and sometimes if you're lucky some hot eye candy.

I haven't seen any for a while that I really rated, probably A Single Man was the last one with a gay protagonist that I thought was good.

I agree that there should be more gay thriller/action type films!!

As far as general public acceptance I'd say Brokeback.

Philadelphia for properly portraying the ignorant, prejudice people have against people with HIV.

Lillies (1996) is my personal favorite.

Not one of my favorites, but I think Rocky Horror Picture Show has made an impact. It's more about individuality and sexual diversity than being gay-focused. A musical analogue would be Lady Gaga.

In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned a single man which came out a year or two ago. It is such a sad movie about a gay man that looses his spouse and it is based in the 70's which was an era when homosexuality was considered to be a disease. I highly recommend this movie especially to cuddle with someone. Our GSA group watched it and it is wonderful.

thanks for the movie suggestions guys. i will be updating my netflix queue shortly.

to add to the movie list. this isn't groundbreaking gay cinema or a life changer, but one of my favorite LGBT flicks is the witty rom-com (romantic comedy), kissing jessica stein.

a couple of my fav. scenes...

    watch out, it's a tearjerker.

    cheer up with this scene.
