This honest criticism is unusual for me because I'm often not arrogant (look at my profile and older posts). I know Avatar came out long ago, but I rented it on Blockbuster.
I haven't watched from beginning to end, but skipped around to the major parts and read about it. I'm glad I did.
The story was predictable. Everyone I know said the movie is terribly cliched and overrated. CGI alone doesn't make a movie good. Without CGI, the story failed.
IMHO, it should offend all of us homo/bi male humans. As androsexual humans, you don't need to ask why, and I don't need to explain. Unless you are a misanthrope...
I've read various reception throughout the web and been to the forums. For those that don't know, the criticism includes that the film is anti-American and -military propaganda; an unoriginal rip-off of Ferngully, Dances with Wolves, Pocahontas, etc.; is poorly written; has cringing bad lines and acting; bad politics; etc. Of course, Jim denies some of these criticisms. Reverse psychology made me root for the humans. If you take it literally, Jake Sully is an evil backstabbing traitor who needs to be tried.
The hardcore fans, whom some call Avatards, seem to have failed logic.
Evan fans of Jim's previous films, like Terminator (1 and 2 were better-written and superior masterpieces) and Titanic, agree with me that Avatar is inferior, stupid-ass CGI crap, which lately interferes with the integrity of film-making.
I had high expectations for James Camoron. Actors/actresses who worked with him say that he's an arrogant douche. In fact, I was so disappointed in Jim and Avatar, that it inspired me to with a story with a more original plot.

The most spoofed line--a classic example of the corny dialogue--from Avatar:

A confirmed sequel (Avatar 2) is coming, so it better be better. I'm not having great expectations, however. No surprise.

sounds like youre trolling to me but Im bored so whatever

It is interesting how they compare Avatar's story line with so many other classics...so many that it makes you wonder if any of them deserves the merit of being a great classic. I mean I could say that Fermgully coppied from Dancing with Wolves or that Pocahontas copied from Fermgully and probably Dancing with the wolves got their inspirational story from somewhere else so you know what, everything sucks. All film makers suck and I think Im very smart cause I just noticed how much they suck and now Im pissed because I watched all these "great" movies and I just realized how much I hated them and I feel seriously offended cause Im too smart for this industry.

I watched this movie on IMAX 3D and I enjoyed every second of it. It was such a great experience. I loved the story very much and how they made it work so perfectly with the visual experience and all the talent involved in creating such a CLASSIC so that it would appeal to a wider audience rather than just you.

Dude, WTF are you talking about?

I think AVATAR is a masterpiece. James Cameron might not have the smartest dialogue in the industry, but the CGI, his imagery and art direction are breathtaking. Who cares if the story is a re-wash of all those other films? It is a common fact that all stories are just re-generation of other stories, in any medium, whether its books or movies.

TITANIC is and will always be my favorite film and AVATAR does not come anywhere close to it. But AVATAR is a great film, and just like TITANIC, people love to hate on it. It's "cool" to hate it.

And AVATAR is offensive to gay people?
    That comment...I can't even

This is funny. You have resorted to name calling in the name of criticizing other people's logic.

I will agree the movie is uninspired and fairly painful to sit through but offensive? Not really.

Jim? Hmmm...Jim. So, I'm assuming you know him and have worked with him. And thus, surely, you've shared this perspective with him in a chat in hopes he'll take your counsel for the sequels. Better yet, buddy Jim, the highest grossing producer director in the history of the industry, must be aching to see his friend's screenplay and help get it made, in spite of perpetuating the 'arrogant douche' rumors and disappointment over his performance. How's that going?

In spite of the OPs rather confusing verbal upchuck... it is no industry secret that James Cameron is one of the biggest assholes in the film industry. These are not "rumours", but rather, just a general consensus of many who have worked with him. However, it is to some degree different for actors, take Sigourney, who has worked with him on a few occasions, but I do know several crew members who have worked with him and can't even watch his films anymore because of their unrelenting hatred and disgust over his personality.

Having said that, I enjoyed Avatar. No, it didn't have an original story; but its strengths were elsewhere. It was groundbreaking in certain respects, and I watched the movie expecting that, and not a cinematic masterpiece. I came out of the film pleased, with expectations fully met, and then I saw it again.

and an ambitious professional of any sort would be discreet enough not to put up a public posting about a powerful executive, no matter how much of a creep they think he is based on other people's testimonials, because it's a VERY small community. Nobody said he can't have an opinion, but there's a time and a place. icon_rolleyes.gif

Upon the death of much-loathed producer Harry Cohen, Red Skelton remarked on the size of the crowd attending his funeral with this famous line: "It proves what Harry always said: Give the public what they want and they'll come out for it."

As for the unAmerican part...actually thats totally what we do. Find a thriving culture, label it "savage" and slaughter them in thousands/convert them all to Christianity. I like how "we even tried giving them roads" in the movie. How stupid can we get? Obviously they get around in cover of the trees to protect themselves from the animals.

Also Steven Hawking says we are due for an alien visit (snrk) and it will be just like what Europeans did to Native Americans...and later what white Americans did to them.

I agree. I do not get the unprofessional behaviors that surround James Cameron. Honestly, he is a mastermind and he is known to want everything very specific, and if that comes off as assholeish, let it be. His films do not gross billions of dollars because of how nice he is. He has complete control over all creative aspects of his films and he should.

    Who cares?

    It's a MOVIE.

It's PURELY for entertainment.. and it was indeed entertaining.

MOST great ideas were in some way copied from someone else.

If you don't like it, don't watch it.

But most importantly, do something useful with your time and life.. or just get a life.

why are you asking this now. the movie is old... and in IMO one of hollywood's best ever.

why not make up your own mind by watching the whole thing from start to finish. if you don't like it, you don't have to watch it again. easy enough.

The message about being green is still cliched. It has been done before and better.
