A Toast

One of the cool, young guys on here (everyone on here is cool) messaged me about coming out. We exchanged a few emails about it, until he decided to do it, by telling his mother. The day he did I told him my friends and I would toast him on Montjuic in front of the Magic Fountain.

Yesterday he emailed saying he had done it.

And last night 6 friends of mine and I took a rather nice bottle of cava to the fountain and toasted our friend who was half a world away only in body, not in spirit.

This is a Toast to everyone who is in the process of coming out or has come out recently or contemplating it. You stand on shoulders of giants. We all stand behind you.

    One of my favourite toasts:
"I drink it when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes, I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it if I am; Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty."

-Attributed to Madame Lilly Bollinger, of the House of Bollinger. (1884-1977)

    another good one:
"In Victory you deserve it; in defeat, you need it."
    -Napoleon Bonaparte (attributed)

I've heard of this "coming out process". I'm told it's hard. Don't know, but cheers :) Best of luck.

To come out is both a Cinderella or Phoenix like moment as well as a sloughing off of a heavy, secret burden.

You become the maker of meaning,
forging an identity for yourself that straight people can't quite relate to as it is in many ways outside.

For some this outside is desperately cold, others of us have safety nets and find that when we make that first step off the cliff there was no gap as we had feared and the love from those around us continues unabated.

In much of the west we have the luxury of venturing out, and even when difficult it can be an adventure; in other places the exit is deadly.

Let us be experts at welcoming, offering unconditional love and acceptance. As filters of the ugliness of rejection so many offer, we turn the movement around on its head with open arms.

To us out means in, into a world greater and grander full of hope and potential.

We have the opportunity to show the world profound grace. From the outside we can show and say that everything will be alright.
