I certainly hope the documentary includes strong, scientific debunking of the Exodus and Christian "conversion" therapies - not to mention that plenty of us are NOT Christians nor perhaps even religious and don't put any credence in the BuyBull and this religious approach and denial therapy is harmful, irrelevant to people of other faiths or to atheists and agnostics.! Otherwise this is just another plug on a popular show for this organization and its proven harmful treatments -- without any rebuttal and serious, in -depth exposure of the Exodus program.

I don't watch Oprah. However, I understand it's a hugely popular show, and this could have been (may still be) a great opportunity to educate and inform the audience and viewers for once that the "ex-gay" therapy is a sham, does harm, is despicable (IMO), and should cease to be accepted as a valid psychological treatment at all. Enough!

PS This is the same pattern that news "interviews" or "mini-debates" consist of -- no honest appraisal of hate groups, no tag naming them as hate groups, no point-by-point rebuttal of the falsehoods, spin, and truncated or faulty scientific "studies" cited by the anti-gay groups and spokesmen. The lies go on unchallenged because pretty much no one so far is prepared and erudite/eloquent enough on screen and during the verbal exchanges to punch holes in the "traditional family" value and anti-gay talking heads on those short interviews.

Although subtle, the title of this week's episode of Our Own with Lisa Ling is a question: "Pray the Gay Away?" I would expect that Ms. Ling and her editors will remain objective in their presentation of the issue. I don't know about the viewership of OWN, but the episode could either be preaching to the choir or broadening people's horizons (or both).

Here's a quote from an interview with Ms. Ling:

"Q: Regarding “Pray the Gay Away,” after you interviewed Alan Chambers [president of Exodus International], what were your feelings about him and Exodus International?

A: Well, to be honest with you, I went into Exodus kind of looking for a fight. But I actually found people who were quite loving and kind. If you fundamentally don’t think homosexuality is in line with your faith and you think you can live a straight lifestyle with a wife or a husband, then that’s your prerogative. If you feel you can do that and that’s what you want to do, I’m not gonna tell you that you’re wrong for doing it. My problem is when people condemn other people for who they are."

I just watched the "Pray the Gay Away?" episode of Our America with Lisa Ling and thought Lisa Ling approached the piece objectively.

The two contrasting groups featured were:
    1) Exodus International, which tells people that it was some past event in their life that led them to become gay. Although the group cannot promise a cure, its pastoral staff will always be there to support and pray with the members. Exodus International has spawned a group of individuals who work around the country to provide similar support at the community level. Christian, a gay man in Minneapolis, was featured as one of the "works in progress".
    2) The Naming Project, an affirming camp for gay Christian teenagers.

Many themes discussed on RJ forums were raised in this episode, including masculinity vs. femininity, whether one can live as a Christian and a gay man, the cause of homosexuality, temptation, peer support, family support, etc.

There's a different opinion about Lisa Ling's "coverage" of the Pray Away The Gay of Exodus Intl.:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS2MmgeORY8&feature=player_embedded

Doesn't seem so impartial or objective (or thorough enough)

I agree that it's hard to be thorough when you have 42.5 min of commercial-free time to cover such a broad topic. I viewed the video you linked to (made by wbesen on YouTube), and wbesen's beef seems to be more with Exodus International, and he's blaming the episode for not espousing his biased view. He's certainly entitled to his opinion. What wbesen fails to mention in his tirade is that in the episode, Ms. Ling interviewed not only Exodus co-founder Alan Chambers, but also co-founder Michael Busse. Mr. Busse actually left Exodus International and spoke at length about his reasons for doing so in the episode. Had wbesen been more objective and analytical in his assessment of the episode, I'd be more likely to pay attention to what he has to say. However, he's just as biased as he claims Ms. Ling to be. I encourage those who have not yet watched the episode to do so in its entirety (for free) here, to make their own judgements of the objectivity or non-objectivity of the piece.

What does transvestitism have to do with gay news? Most transvestites are heterosexual.

The attack was was over man, but I think you're taking the post a little too seriously. The clue should have been the words 'Jerry' and 'Springer'.

What attack? It doesn't sound abnormal to me to have Jerry Springer reruns featuring 'Attack Of The Tranny Cousins'... he's covered much more provocative topics.

No need to apologize, you haven't done anything wrong. I'm just a very inquisitive person trying to get some more information to better understand what you meant.

That's cute. I've seen your posts here on RJ and know you're a good guy so I am glad to see you be the bigger man than me and stop a silly argument before it could escalate. Thanks.

Oprah has been a huge supporter of our community, so it's difficult to believe that she would air something that is blantantly rubbish as Exodus International on her channel. It's difficult to really report on such things. Individuals in that program are told that homosexuality is a "dirty little secret" and the sound bites you do get are those that have the ability to speak well, however not correctly.

Still, I have faith that the organizations painful consequences will come to light.

The Naming Project, from my memory this morning, is a positive reconcilation, wereas you can be gay and Christain and keeps kids off suicide watch. Can't remember-will probably have to google that one.

    peace,
    Bardy
