Supplements and Erections

I've recently started following a Hypertrophy-specific training program and aside from supplementing my diet with protein and creatine I've been taking some supps in tablet form over the past few days:

    L-arginine
    Tribulus Terrestris
    ZMA

Now what I've notice the past day or so is that I'm waking up in the morning (and I wake up a few times in the morning before I actually get up) and I've got massive morning wood, much more than usual, and throughout the day I'm getting erections very much more easily than usual, just from a few bumps in the car or shifting in my seat at work! Is this a side-effect to taking the above? I know the Tribulus is meant to boost testosterone, have any other guys had this happen?

It's not the testosterone. Something must be causing greater nitric oxide (NO) production.

    It's the Tribulus Terrestris

"...The active chemical in T. terrestris is likely to be protodioscin (PTN),[18] a cousin to DHEA. In a study with mice, Tribulus was shown to enhance mounting activity and erection better than testosterone cypionate.[citation needed] This however, is not as convincing as one might think. Although an OTC supplement outpacing a pharmaceutical is big news, testosterone cypionate is a synthetic ester of testosterone engineered for its longer activity. (Testosterone cypionate has a half-life of 8 days and is administereed every 2–4 weeks in humans for testosterone replacement."National Institutes of Health". Retrieved April 24, 2010). The proerectile aphrodisiac properties were concluded to likely be due to the release of nitric oxide from the nerve endings innervating the corpus cavernosum penis. ..."

L-arginine has been used for erectile dysfunction.

Although the following is off topic, the observations are rather disturbing. NSAIDS and aspirin are linked to erectile dysfunction.

Interesting! Actually, having read about the effects of ZMA as well being boosted erections, it's no wonder really that taking all three together is giving me more wood than a furniture factory!

It can be both the Tribulus Terrestris and L-Arginine. Tribulus Terrestris indirectly as it increases testosterone which does increase libido/sex drive.

However, in this case it is the L-Arginine specifically for the wood. I believe someone has indicated it on here already. L-Arginine increases NO which increases blood flow. This affects the entire body, each part in its own way. What is the cause of wood? Increased blood flow to that area.

So will it settle down in time or just one of those things I'll have to cope with as a side-effect?

What positive results have you been seeing lately? Does this combo have a effect on the training regime you are currently following?
I'm totally ignorant on this sort of thing, and would really like to know.

And as far as side effects go, a couple (dozen?) boners do not sound so bad.

I think it's probably too early to tell re: positive results, as I've only just started a new training program and hence the supps to have with it, I just wanted to have as much of a helping hand as possible and thought they would work well with it.

I suppose side effects-wise it's not that much of a problem, as long as the morning glory has faded a bit by the time I get to work!

Been told by a nurse friend that L Arginine is a natural viagra. Take it myself with protein & creatine and usually can get "wood" frequently and as needed. lol

that's bollocks L-arginine i find gives me super mental focus or maybe it was another ingredient with my pre workouts, in short, i usually dont get horny because of L-argeinine my bet is on tribulus.

there is a small possibility i react different to supplements as well (i dont really react much to pre-workouts like jack3d but react way more to nitric oxide based pre workouts) but i doubt that is the case

L-Arginine is a vasodilator. If you take it before bed, you'll get stronger morning wood (and I used to get crazy dreams too). I always got a positive result with L-Arginine, and had a negative reaction to Tribulus a couple times I tried it.

Be careful with L-Arginine, though. Arginine and Lysine compete with each other, and an imbalance towards arginine can trigger an outbreak of herpes viruses. That isn't just genital herpes, also cold sores and chicken pox/shingles. You're very likely to carry some sort of strain. I got shingles while taking arginine through a stressful period with a low immune system, and it's awful!

I've read that L-Tyrosine improves mental focus. Maybe you are confusing it with L-Arginine above... because L-Arginine is a vasodilator just like nitric oxide, which you said below works for you.

Or just good ole cantaloupe...it has polyphenols that enter the endothelium of blood vessels and produce NO, which relaxes the vessels and helps with erections.

Pumpkin seeds are a good source of L-Arginine, zinc and protein. Perfect snack! icon_smile.gif
