What if there is a guy that is giving off a lot of signs and you want to approach them and talk to them about going out sometime...

and then find out they are straight!!??? Crap!!! I hate that!!

I have done that twice and it is so uncomfortable because the friendship is often over at that point.. it is too weird...

There is a guy I am going to lunch with this week that I really like and he is pretty awesome. When I think about him, "gay" makes perfect sense, but I dont KNOW that is true. I do not want to ruin my relationship with him.

How do I broach the subject in a non-threatening, non-drama inducing type of way while not dancing around the subject either?

Well why don't you simply say this....

"So how has your dating life been so far? Ever met with any women or men that you found interesting?"

Now if he replies about the former and asks you why men simply say that you were merely inquiring because you're such a great guy to be around that I'm sure you have a lot admirers from both sexes.

I think its a good spin on a non threatening yet flattering approach hmmm

I think that's quite good, but the actual text comes across as a bit clunky. You could just say "So have you been on any good dates lately?" and see what he says. If he mentions a girl then you know, if he mentions a guy then you know, if he mentions a non-gender specific person then you know it's probably a guy and you can ask whether it's a guy or girl.
