Hey everyone. I recently got a notification in my inbox that Android now has an official version of Grindr in the Android Market. There are however kinks that still need to be worked out. Such as constant crashes. It's only available for Android 2.1 - 2.2 as of now. If you haven't checked it out, here's the link:

    Enjoy the download! Cheers!

Amazing... is what I would say if it wasn't for the fact that my provider has been holding off giving my SIM-card for 2 weeks.

I'm surprised that Apple hasn't removed Grindr from the app store yet considering their policies on inappropriate or objectionable material via apps from the app store.

Grindr censors all dirty pics uploaded to their serves theres no reason for Apple to remove it. what you use the app for is not their problem. Even Tap Tap Revenge's chat room can get dirtier than Grindr, oh, and unlike Grindr the average age in there is 12. Bottom line is every chat service would have to be banned from the AppStore

Sticking with Encountr because at least it works correctly 95% of the time. I couldn't even upload my pic over 802.11n after several tries. This is one of those times when I actually miss my iPhone because it seems that developers are more competent with Objective C than Java. *sigh*. At least I'll have stable access to both apps when I pick up the iPad 2 this weekend. I don't mind tinkering with my phone, but I draw the line at media devices. Geez, does this make me technologically omnisexual?

My app-IQ has fallen off the cliff like a herd of buffalo, I have not been able to solve a single problem:

    1. Battery usage: 50% every day regardless of not even looking at it or doing nothing but looking at it
    2. Even when I am not in the app or have sound levels set to zero (vibrate) I can still hear the weird scratchy noise when I receive a message. If I can't get that problem fixed (for now) I am either going to need to set it to airplane mode or just delete the app.

I swear I do not live under a rock.

Grindr on Android sucks. It's is very slow to load and once loaded it takes even longer to connect to their servers. I've used Encountr and Scruff and I can say that other than the profiling info that is superior on Grindr (and which can be easily replicated on the other apps), they both perform better.

The problem with Encountr: community is small; chat feature is super-slow.
The problem with Scruff: too many bears.

Conceptually, I think the three apps are cool ideas. However, now that I have used them, I'm less than impressed because it takes a long time to communicate with another app-user and can easily lag for days. The point of mobile is instant communication. These apps are not instant. Too little information and durations are too long for discovery of the other person.

With respect to my complaints above:

    1. Force close the app when you are done looking. Battery usage down to an obnoxious but livable 20%

    2. Load the Music or Pandora app, set the application noise to the X (absolute minimum) and annoying grinder (get it? I didn't until just now) sound is gone.

GPS is still pretty glitchy, but I did make a new friend in Indiana today (who knew smartphones were available in Indiana? I did not)

Won't work on 2.3.3. Of course by the time it does we'll be at 2.5 or something.

For those on the Gingerbread (2.3.3) Android version, this download "worked" for mine. Formerly used for MyTouch downloads. Still a pretty awful battery drain, and it crashes periodically, especially if you press buttons too fast, but it comes back up and it's the best they've got so far.

Anyone using Grindr 1.0.8 for Android? It's constantly crashing my HTC Sensation 4G. The last version was way more stable.

PS Sorry to bring back a dead thread, but it's the best one El Goog could find.

I've actually met some decent people on Grindr. They're usually perfectly normal individuals.
