Got this message on Grinder when I got up this morning...found this guy's phone and an empty beer glass outside my front door.

Grindr said he was 83 feet away....he used Grindr to track down where I live. (I was not interested in meeting him and NEVER told him where I live.I told him I was seeing someone and he asked if he could watch.)

Creepy. Wonder if there is a way to disable the feature showing how close you are?

I believe there is. Under Account Settings, you can choose to turn off "Show Distance."

That's borderline with the movie "Obsessed".

Might have to pull a Beyonce on his ass.

If she's local, return it to his mum with those messages showing. If not, to work?

Maybe you shouldn't use Grindr to avoid this situation from happening again. Turning off the "Show distance" feature doesn't mean he or anyone else won't be able to find you and I'm sure there is a way you can bypass that feature like everything else so it doesn't really solve the problem.

Think about it. If you can jailbreak the I-phone then I'm sure you can tweek and bypass app security functions like "show distance"

In any case you shouldn't act so surprised. What did you think it was for? It's a tool/app used to find others like "you" within your area. In other words, as soon as you add that app to your phone you are now a homing/tracking device so it shouldn't come as a shock if someone takes that extra step to actually find you and ends up on your door step. It's practically an invitation. Facebook and twitter are the same as well if you have the app on your phone. Lesson learned I guess. LOL.

In lieu of the creep factor (it still is creepy) there's really only one person you can blame for this

Yes. I am guilty of using Grindr.

From now on, the distance function will be off.

I guess what really surprised me was that someone would walk around trying to find my house at midnight in freezing weather.

Hmm, given that grindr (I don't have it, but obvious guess) is using GPS coordinates, you ought to be able to program it to automatically turn off (or at least turn off the show distance) when within a certain distance of a chosen location (e.g. home).
To prevent accidentally setting up situations like this.
There are already apps out there whose behavior depends on location, this would be a good future for an update I think. Should be recommended to the grinder company/group.

ps: if you have his phone you ought to be able to figure out who he is. A quick police report (just so something is on file if there are future problems) might be in order.

I think turning off Show Distance will still have you show up on their display if they are close to you - in order of your proximity to them compared to others.

To be even more sure and not rely on Grinder options, you can go to Settings - General - Location Services. You can turn off location services completely, or just for specific applications. That will prevent you from seeing who is close to you, but if you're not interested in that at the moment, wouldn't be an issue. Will also prevent you from being in their nearby list.
