What's your favorite event to swim competitively? icon_smile.gif

I'm a distance swimmer... The 500 Free has been my baby since high school and I love it. The 1000 and 1650 are good too but can get too monotonous. I used to do butterfly too.

I'm terrible at backstroke and breaststroke... and sprinting. I'm really uncomfortable during backstroke, and I'm just really slow at breaststroke. As a result I'm a pretty poor IMer, haha.

    What about you?

Favorite events... the ones that show off the swimmers' rocking bodies? icon_biggrin.gif

I think breast stroke looks crazy impressive. I don't know enough about swimming, though. I was always the kid who couldn't pass swim class because he couldn't float on the water. (I was just a dense, muscular kid from day 1) icon_redface.gif

My favorite is the 200 Breast. I just have never been able to have a quick turnover for my 100 to be what it should be compared to my 200. If you look at all the other swimmers in the race, they're taking 2 strokes for every one stroke I take. Naturally the longer races are my best like the 400 IM. But there is also a difference at being good at a certain event and actually ENJOYING that event, which in my case is the 400 IM.

I'm more a sprinter so I prefer 50m free of fly and shorter IMs (100m in short course meets or 200m in long course).

I agree with you that the length events can be montonous (e.g. 800m, 1500m)

The 100 and 200 breaststroke are definitely my best events. I also like the 400 I.M. I'm just not tall enough to be great at freestyle.

100m and 50m freestyle are my best events, but they aren't my favourite.
I Love the 100m and 200m butterfly, even though for butterfly I'm better at 50's.

But it's just hard here in the Netherlands. We are a sprinting nation and everyone seems to love the same events.

Breaststroke and backstroke are dumbstrokes. Why would anyone choose to deliberately do a stroke that is not efficient.

200 back is where it's at! Though I'd have to say I'm better at 400 IM as with each 100 my energy completely comes back to me. I guess because you use different muscles?

I have a lot of respect for distance swimmers.
100 backstroke and 100 freestyle and sometimes 200 IM.

We seem to be pretty similar when it comes to swimming, lol. I started off as strictly a distance swimmer and then as I went through high school my coach had me doing more events. By the time I graduated high school my coach had me doing the 200 Free, 500 Free, 1000 Free, 1650 Free, 200 Fly, and 400 IM. (yeah, he's fucking crazy! hahah). Then when I got to college they had me doing only the 200, 500 and the 200 Fly. And this past season they had me doing the 500 and mile. I was SO excited that they got me doing the mile again! My school record was stolen from me at the beginning of the season, and at nationals I DESTROYED the record. I love distance swimming! icon_biggrin.gif

Well, if you are talking distance swims, I'd say I love open water marathon swims ~~ Always a surprise in store. I like getting into the tide of the day when the moon and water are at play. Waves are so cool too. Sealife to sting you. Getting kicked in the head by another swimmer. Some other yucky stuff floating on the water to run into. Night swims are kind of freeky with the thought of what lurks below or glows. Yeah, all kinds of fun so if anyone's interested, they hold these events around the world. My bucket list is kind of long.

My favorite events are 100M & 200M breaststroke, especially long course. I also really like racing 100 IM short course, and 200 IM long course.

    Backstroke is not my friend...

    25 & 50 yard sprints in freestyle.
also good at breaststroke & backstroke.
I like to do 600 yard workouts & try to get them done in less thatn 10 minutes. It is an old lifeguard test we use to do so it helps me prove to myself that I can still do it.

Never was a big distance swimmer. I would do the 100 Free, 50 Free, And relays with my team but Always free. I never really mastered the other strokes all that well so I stuck with what I did best... Landed me Varsity my freshman year. (of high school that is... damn... so long ago it seems).

I'm similar (definitely a sprinter), but with backstroke: 100, 50, 200, and medley relay. My 50 free is OK (had a time I was very happy with at Gay Games).

My fly sucks, I'd definitely like to improve it so I can do the 200 IM without dying....

Distance free style for sure. I've got no sprinting speed at all, but you can't stop me once I've gotten into a good pace.

I swam the 100/200 back. My practice consisted of doing everything the freestyle sprinters did, only in backstroke with the same intervals. It sucked.

I was used for the sprints in relays and when we needed extra points in meets, but never trained for it. I wish I had trained for the 50/100 free, cause without the training I was still pretty fast at them.

Diving was my favorite though. I was a rare breed in college to swim and dive competitively (a swiver). And I'm not talking about those fat not talented swimmers that you put on the boards to score extra point in a meet. I made it to nationals in diving and got a B cut in the 100 back for swimming. I also got 11 school records at my college.

I miss swimming and diving competitively now icon_sad.gif
