You have to plug it in first.
Make sure the ink cartridges are full though; Windows 7 allocates memory for printer installations based on the ink levels. If they're low, the printer won't install properly.

It only works if you get a big gay muscle man stud muffin who'll have sex with you to install the software.

You need to go to the HP website and search for the exact model number of your printer and see if there's a driver for it that you can download and install.

Have you tried printing yet? You may already have the driver on your laptop. Windows should do an install when it detects a new device, and you may get an error message if it doesn't find a driver for your older printer. In that case you should go to the the HP online support site, find the latest Windows driver for your model printer to download and install.

You might not read this post anymore since your post is over a year old but I had a similar issue with a back-then freshly new DV9000 with Vista and a PhotoSmart that was only XP. I'd tried everything from downloading the driver directly from HP's website multiple times and even had HP remotely access both devices to no avail. I gave up and bought a compatible EPSON All-in-One because I couldn't get both devices to work. When it comes to compatibility/driver issues, HP is the worst.

Actually he posted a new question on 8/30/12 about getting a new laptop, that might have merited a new thread. Though it does seem odd he's had the latest computer for 5 weeks, and is just now asking about printing something.

Usually those HP photosmart printers tell you (via LCD screen) how to install it as soon as you plug it up and turn it on. At least mine did.
