Why do People put 99 in for Their Age in Profiles?

I'm sure others have seen this but I've noticed guys on here and other dating sites who have pics of them where they look like they're in their 20's and 30's put 89 or 99 down for their age.

What's that all about? Are these fake profiles?

Are they being funny? I'm guessing their fake because they don't have a lot of information about themselves but maybe their in the closet and don't want to give a lot of info about themselves out due to being "found out", despite having face pics of themselves...

    Anyone know why?

They're generally not fake profiles--well, not mine at least. Some people, like me (my profile says I'm 99 years old and I would have said 1000 if RJ allowed it, and I'm certainly not 99), (i) think age is of no particular importance, and putting our age down as 99 or higher telegraphs that message, AND/OR (ii) we're extremely discreet (and/or not completely out) and we don't want casual RJ readers to be able to put our pictures, profile, and other information (including age) together in order to "out" us. That's one explanation, but there may be others.

If you're really curious, just ask the particular RJ member. If he's real, he will tell you his own reason. That or ask to meet him in public and see for yourself. RJ members who are "real" will not hesitate to meet if there's some connection between you and him.

Interesting, didn't know it had to do with age discrimination.

DOMINUS said AND/OR (ii) we're extremely discreet (and/or not completely out) and we don't want casual RJ readers to be able to put our pictures, profile, and other information (including age) together in order to "out" us. That's one explanation, but there may be others.

But if you were "outed" wouldn't the person who see's you profile on here or other gay dating sites be "outed" themselves? Why would they be on a those places if they're not gay or bi themselves? I know you have you're reasons but I think it's better to just to put your information down as it helps people get a better idea of who you are.

I've been wondering about that also.

    IN MY OPINION...
Because too many gay men place too much importance on age. Personally, I could give a rat's butt if someone has issues about my age, but I DO know that there are a number of guys on RJ who think anyone over 30 is over the hill.
I am thrilled to have lived a long and full life and I wouldn't trade places for ANY guy in his 20's for all the tea in China!!
By stating that a guy is 99, he is making the point that AGE is NOT an issue, and I admire anyone who thinks that way!!!

because......age is just a number on the back of your driver's licence and NONE of the business of a casual profile checker.

Your logic is severely flawed. Think about it.

what if I put 69 as my age when I'm obviously not (or at least I hope I don't look it!)? would that be code for anything?

Because once you are over 28 you are old in gay years and it doesn't matter anyways. icon_rolleyes.gif

For me it's a control thing. As a fat kid with glasses, I learned early on how people make judgments based upon scant information. So I like to control that information and how and when it's revealed.

You'd be amazed how differently people would view me if they found out I'm really 103.

Maybe it's me, but I really don't care how old someone is. I've been very fortunate to be able to learn things from people who are older and younger than myself. I know this is cliche but age is just a number, it's what's inside that matters.
That said...I'm still more attracted to "experienced" men. icon_twisted.gificon_razz.gif

i didn't write that age isn't important 2 me. some other posters wrote that it's not important 2 them thus they list their age as 99. yet, if age is not an issue, then why not list ur real age?
