"There is no sound sweeter to any person, than the sound of their own name."
I've learned to remember people's names by being present and really paying attention to others. When I hear a person's name, I use it with them in conversation a few times. I mentally say their name as I look at their face.
When in a group. I don't "move on" to the next person until I have remembered their name. Then, as I meet each additional person in the group, I will either verbally say the names of the persons who I met previously, or do so in my head.
When I am with a friend, and we meet somebody who is a friend of my friend, if I am not introduced by name, I will ask the other person's name. This helps my friend if he/she forgot their friends' name.
Life is all about relationships. Using and remembering people's names is a way to show that you care. When people sense that you care about them, all kinds of good things happen whether they are good looking or not.
