hey guys! thinking about playing softball or kickball in order to put myself out there locally (and dodge going to clubs). Need some thoughts on this...good way to meet down-to-earth guys? I also love sports, so could be a win-win! icon_razz.gif

I would strongly recommend that you do.... I have lots a friends how play gay-league sports. Not only is it a great way to meet guys who are more likely to be into the same stuff you are...but it's great way to power up your self esteem...unlike sitting on some friggin' bar stool!!

I recommend it. I play gay dodgeball and am on a gay diving team which is under a gay water sports umbrella organization.

I didn't know there were gay dodgeball and kick ball teams, I wonder if there are any in my area.

I think those types of leagues are found in big cities like LA, SF, Chicago, NY City, Boston.... you maybe limited. Just sayin'...

I think that would be very fun. Great way to meet people with similar interests that may not be in it just to have sex... and to meet someone you find hot who is more compatible. Go for it.

That's a great idea, go_vols. I personally used to practice Olympic wrestling in the only gay wrestling club in Montreal while I was leaving there and had some of the best sport moments in my life. Our club was even invited by the NYC gay Wrestling club to participate to the NYC Gay Pride Parade in 2001 (or was it 2002? don't remember). We also participated to the 2002 Gay Games in Sydney Australia. You will meet great people who are not always after sex (which is quite a good thing even though it may sounds bad ;-) and if you participate to sport events in the community, you will definitely widen your circle of friends.
    Take care.

I just did quick search of gay leagues in Raleigh, and found a good page here: http://www.lgbtcenterofraleigh.com/site/resources It's got many types of clubs and groups, including sports (towards the bottom).

I think joining a league or any sort of gay club is a great idea! I just joined the gay men's chorus here, and it is a blast. It's a great way to meet people with similar interests, and though it might be taboo to date someone in the group, you can still meet their friends!

    Good luck Brad!

    Dude, go for it.

I want to but there isn't one close by. I can't afford the 45 minute trip there and back otherwise I'd be in Ann Arbor doing it!

It could be worth it. But be careful they can be clicky and catty. There's a flag football team around here and they had a drive for new members. Turned out they only wanted new members to fill out their roster so they could play in a league and never let any of the new guys play. Only the ones that had been there and were buddies got to play. I left practice it was soooo high school cheerleader squad.

Yea Brad I think it is a great idea. Have been researching them for my move to Kansas City. I have never heard anything bad about joining a gay sports league. And if you are up for it, how about picking a sport you like and starting a gay league of that sport in Raleigh? Now if that doesn't put you out there, I don't know what will? Good luck!

There are usually gay softball teams, bowling leagues, etc.
If not, you could start your own.

I just want to second the suggestion of joining a gay/bi friendly sports league or association. Not sure what the situation is like in Raleigh, but it sounds as if you have some good options. NY is terrific. I played with the Ramblers (soccer) in NY for a while, and it was a great mix of athletic gay/bi and a few str8 guys playing serious soccer at a very competitive basis. Same mix in hockey and rugby. Those three sports tend to be a little more mixed than 100% gay because good field times are scarce, but gay guys have their act together and so are able to secure good permits...so everyone wants to play on the "gay" teams. There are also gay sports associations for virtually any sport, even sailing. I have always founds sports to be a great way to meet guys, where sex is NOT the first priority, but still always a possibility if the chemistry is good.
