Update: Today I got one guy to write about it. I'm not stopping though.
    http://dannation.org/2011/03/29/time-for-your-singlet-homophobia-and-homoerotica-in-wrestling/

I've been contacting sports writers who have written against Anti-Gay behavior in MMA and wrestling to see if they will cover the bashing that I uncovered in my wrestling documentary. Not once in any article have I seen a clip of an actual bashing victim; they usually just cover UFC and WWE gay slurs. So....this is the response that I got from one of them today regarding the clip below. Take a bet, is he going to consider it, or was this a brush off?

    "Victor,

Thanks for your note. I just watched the first clip on YouTube. It's
very compelling. I really appreciate the work you've done and I
    appreciate you reaching out. (name)"

    Here's the clip:

TO be honest it was a brush off. If they considered it they would have been more direct and shown more interest.

Good video, looks like a good documentary. Good luck with it. Tragic though that in these sports homophobia still exists.

Yeah, it's a polite brush off.
Very good video by the way. Well done.

It's worth keeping him on your contact list and continuing to reach out to him every now and then. I agree it doesn't sound like he's planning to do anything with the material now, but unless he's compulsively polite about replying to unsolicited pitches -- I say this as someone whose inbox at work always has a minimum of 80 unread messages -- you made some kind of impression.

And homophobia in MMA/wrestling isn't going away, so you'll get plenty of opportunities in the future to use the latest incident to connect it to your film, send him a link to a different clip, etc.

If you're not doing so already, I'd suggest following this guy's writing to get a feel for how the topic fits into his overall beat. Your pitches will stand out against those who rarely read his stuff.

By the way, have you contacted MMA/wrestling sportswriters in South Carolina, where the guy in the clip's from? Seems like a great opportunity for one of them to localize a story.

Good luck. I liked the clip.

Funny you should ask. I contacted the only gay rag in SC a year ago and didn't get a reply back. So I followed up and the guy who ran the rag was very dismissive and rude. It shocks the hell out of me how people in the gay media will turn a blind eye to this but will write about what new outfit Lady GaGa is wearing.

I live in SC and it is the most repressed state in the United States.

There are no (zero) openly gay elected officials anywhere, on any level. Not city councils, not school boards, not clerks of court, not even water commissioners.... there are none.

Every election, there is a tactic by the right to hurt candidates who are moderates (we have no liberals who stand any chance) by branding them as "pro gay rights".

There is a feeling among citizens that prejudice against homosexuals is justified. If I can totallly out, I would get fired without question and I have no legal protections; if I were fired because "We think that since youre gay you shouldn't work here anymore", I cannot sue them. I have no rights.

I am not surprised about the lack of concern for this young athlete.
