In the context of contemporary culture and lifestyle, what do you think if you compare European Union and United States? What are differences, what similarities? Where and why would you rather live?

When I think of the EU, I think of a very well educated population, as opposed to the U.S., which I think of as generally uneducated. I also automatically envy their multi-party system, as opposed to ours "first past the post" dual party system. I think a multi-party system more accurately reflects populace. Lastly, I think of all the smokers over there. ICK!

Tough tough, they both have their upsides and downsides... US is bigger though and has more choice for natural surroundings... so Id pick that.. but the food and culture is better in the EU generally, so there EU... toss up

O wait: one place that has it all... HAWAII icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif (but is that REALLY the US?)

Yes Hawaii is a real state in the US. Not a territory if you were thinking it might have been.

lol no of course not... but to consider Hawaii in the same terms as US proper, is alot like considering Tahiti as the EU.. its politically related, but quite a different kind of environment, culture, the whole shebang

I personally think they are both overrated. Loved Japan and would live there in a heartbeat.

A bunch of countries that secretly hate each other, got together in order to compete with the US so they don't end up looking like the poor siblings. Uhum! Envy can move mountains. ^-^

When I think of EU vs US, I think of government vs. private sector divide.

The EU is very expensive and often difficult to get tasks done smoothly, while the US has many ways to get it done.

I lived in the EU, Canada (where I'm from originally) and now the US, and by far I feel like I have most choice in life here in the US.

In terms of lifestyles, I can afford twice as much material possessions as I would in Canada and probably 3 times as much as I did in Europe. Then again, I was younger when I was living in all those places.

I feel that in the US we are also exposed to media and cultural trends faster than they are overseas, or even Canada. I recently found out that many videos and broadcasts are blocked over youtube streaming overseas unless you use a proxy?! etc.

To kinda summarize my mixed thoughts, I "feel" more free living in the US, and I make more money, I pay less taxes (even living in southern California). When living in Germany, I felt more cultured, like everything had more "weight"; at the same time, a lot of people who were my age idolized the USA and didn't care much for their local customs and cultures.

Yeah, but your origins are from one of those countries...Not to mention that Europe, or Greece if you like, is cradle of civilization.....Looooong before America was even discovered.
Secretly hate each other? Like US hate Canada and Mexico? And thinks that better than rest of the world? Dude, do your homework.

I don't see the United states of USACAMEX together. When the euros appeared for the first time into this land. The natives described them as very insecure individuals, very self conscious about their appearance, as well as having a very strong stench or foul smell.

When I think of people in the USA I generally think
of people who are ignorant and feel they are the most powerful country in the world. Europe is home to me and I feel that the people here may be a bit more stuck up but at least they generally know more about their own history and the history and culture of other countries.

When I think of China I do not see them as a "winning" team. They are a very fast developing country with alot of promiss for the future but there is still alot of work to do. Labor is still cheap in China and really (together with a fast central political system) is the main key point they have for a fast developing economy. However both these factors will disappear. And also Chinese culture makes them want to be equal to the USA EU or Japan rather than better than any of these countries so I feel they will stop developping as fast when they reach that level.

I think in the EU people have a more collective mentality as opposed to the US' individualist. The easy access to higher education drives this, and I think it has a strong effect on people's world view. The holistic view rules, not just money. In the US there are strong forward-looking private groups, but they are always in conflict with government or other private groups, while in the EU many countries just find consensus.

Police state? No ID cards here,no law requiring you to have your driving licence on you when driving.Hardly any police guns.
OK, lots of CCTV but that's easily fooled if you want to, wear a hat/hoody.

Have you seen what non-Americans go through to get (legally) into the USA just to visit?
