Hey all you college guys...

Here's a dumb question from a clueless old fuck.

When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s a guy was expected to be completely comfortable with being naked around other guys. We were acclimated at an early age - starting in 7th grade we were forced to shower together after gym class. And at the YMCA, which was all male back then, swimsuits were not even allowed in the pool! (Hey, why do you think the Village People were singing about it?)

I only recently learned that high school kids these days typically don't shower at school after gym class or team practices - and in the locker rooms, many don't even change clothes in front of each other (they use the toilet stalls). In the locker room at my gym, anyone under 40 is certainly more shy about undressing than guys were 20 years ago.

Which makes me wonder - what happens when they go off to college? Do guys change clothes in front of their roommates? Do men's dorms still have gang showers? And if so, how do guys handle being thrust into that environment at a very hormonal stage of life, without being conditioned to it from an early age?

My school has a communal open showers so I rarely shower at the school gym. And, if I do for some reason such as after a swim, etc, I shower with my speedo on because I know there are creeps looking at me. icon_redface.gif

I have never taken a community shower . . . ever. I was never asked too. My high school and college dorms all had individual showers. When guys walked around naked in the bathroom, it actually just made everyone agitated. It's like, you can help it man. Just put the towel on. I don't know why its changed. May be it's all the models and porn that we watch these days that show perfect specimens of men with giant penises that have really just lead to an age of insecurity?

I mean personally, I really don't have any desire to shower in a communal shower. The only guys that seemed to use the one at the gym are old creepy guys who stare too much.

When I don't get to work out at my gym, I go to the school's gym and when I'm done, I just grab my stuff and go. Mostly older people who shower naked but the younger ones also just grab their stuff and leave.

I fortunately have always had my own place and never lived in dorms or even had a roommate. I also don't shower in public places as much as possible just because I take a long ass time to shower.

Most, if not all places these days (schools, gyms, dorms) will have separate stalls for showers with curtains or doors. I have lived with guys all through college and being naked in front of one another is just something we try to avoid. The most that ever happened is that we have gone streaking together and I have seen some of them naked because they were passed out drunk and naked, but that's it.

Its just not necessary and we weren't really raised to be comfortable with nudity. Never required or suggested to be naked in front of one another.

It's not something that is imposed on us in high school (typically -- maybe some coaches require it to "respect" the parents cars/noses lol)

It is also avoided in college if possible.

The one thing I don't understand is this: A lot of guys use towels going from/to the showers, which is fine, understandable even. However, there are guys that slip into their skivvies under the towel -- as if it somehow draws less attention.

Gang showers?? Not what they are called anymore....we never took showers in HS after gym but we still changed in front of each other, and was on the swim team as well...still you just learn the towel trick. Like being naken around other guys at that age was not bad enough with everyone on diff levels of pubrity. Still once in College would you just walk into you room and drop the towel and put on a pair of boxers..no, you just put them on then take off your towel. And there are still "gang" showers in the sports building for the atlethes but not in the dorms, of course we have a very small college and on my floor there are only two showers so its easy to make them private...can tell from how it was built though that many of the dorms used to have "gang" showers that were later split up by dividers for more privacy.

Every school i went to had communal showers in the men's locker rooms. HS and both universities i've attended. Personally, i never got naked in a locker room before the age of 19. I wasn't one to change in the toilets while in high school but i would just not get naked. While at my first uni though, i started going to the gym in the mornings or before classes and i would always shower before heading out. it took me a while before getting use to the communal shower but they were almost always empty so it really didn't matter that much. more often than not i was actually even a little turned on by being so naked in a public place. now at the uni of montreal, i always hit the sauna, hot tube and showers after a work out. i wear a towel in the sauna but i go naked in the hot tub and shower and i'm completely comfortable with it.

I've never showered at a communal shower, but as far as roommates, I could care less.

Me and my friends are all very comfortable with each other so it's no big deal to get naked or even swap places in the bathroom after a shower. I think I hit that mark at like 25 when I woke up and said, "I'm tired of being ashamed of my body."

I went through my awkward naked period but that was in 6th and 7th grade when we first started sports at my school. I went to a very very small HS and so we all knew each other very well. We had chest high dividers in the showers so we would talk and bullshit each other all the time. With school sports and gym class we all soon got over our fear of being naked in front of each other real fast! Some guys did the underwear on under the towel but most of us just dropped the towel and raced to put our underwear on before we were exposed for too long! I have become real comfortable with being naked. I am fine with walking around pretty much anywhere naked...I only really cover up to make others around me comfortable. This past year I took a gym volleyball class in college and would shower after ever class. Another guy would always shower at the same time and so it was a little awkward in the beginning but then we talked one day and have become good friends...it is a little awkward when people ask how we met and I have to say....in the shower icon_biggrin.gif

Ok, let me start out by giving my age: 20 years old.

In middle school, the boys' locker room was equipped with communal shower facilities, however it was not a requirement to actually use them. Aside from that, us boys at that age weren't too comfortable getting naked in front of our friends... the most we ever did was strip down to our underwear (briefs, boxers, boxer-briefs, etc.) not really caring if anyone saw what we wore. There was an unspoken fear of not being like "everyone else," especially in terms of puberty and physical change, i.e. cock and ball size, body hair, etc.

Now, in high school, it was pretty much the same thing. Everyone could and would strip to their underwear no problem so long as nothing underneath was showing. And yes, we did use the showers but were not required. I joined my friends and buds in the showers, but none of us actually went nude... we were either in our underwear or swimsuits, again sort of following that unspoken fear/standard of keeping all private matters (no pun intended) to yourself.

In college... YES, the SAME THING APPLIES!!! No one gets nude, ever. We all just stick to our underwear and nothing less. If we had private showers, or at least ones with dividers, that would be a different story.

All in all, I guess this does have to do with the media and popularized fashion. Growing up, Abercrombie and Hollister were HUGE and many of us would compare ourselves to the latest model featured on the big billboard at the front of the stores...

However, the one thing I have noticed is that much of today's media geared towards middle school and high school students DOES NOT actually show nudity. Yes, there is a high level of promiscuity, but the boundary is set at showing no more than a lot of cleavage, a little ass-crack, and some lower abdomen. So, I believe that is a major cause for today's younger generations to not show any more than what they normally see.

times have changed - clearly there are differences in trends among different generations and the acceptance of how your body image appears to others has changed as well.

I've slowly conditioned the guys at work to be more comfortable with male nudity by insisting that being uncomfortable with nudity is a sign of immaturity...which it is.

Now one of them wants to hang out with me at the nude beach once our schedules align.

I think the primary reason communal showers and nudity around other males became taboo was the fear of the "gay agenda." Now with homophobia slowly decreasing, I think it's only a matter of time before guys start becoming more mature again, enough that they can feel comfortable being nude around other nude guys.

For people in the 60's and 70's nudity was a political statement. It was liberating. For us millennials, nudity is, well...nudity! Plain and simple. It may be that we were so bombarded with it following the fitness craze of the 80's and 90's that we are getting a bit more conservative about our bodies. There is also the feeling that you might not "measure up" which the fitness craze also brought about.

The trend is the same in Australia. Many gyms showers have been refurblished and gang showers are replaced by individual cubicles.

i was hoping that the younger generations would become more comfortable with same sex nudity and get past all the homophobic b.s. of their parent's generation...but doesn't appear to be happening, if the above replies are an accurate indication...

I guess its just not enforced like it used to be. Being prior military I have taken plenty of community showers however I honestly believe people only did because they did not wish to be judged as "dirty", like some were for never taking showers simply because they were afraid we would see their penis. Nowadays in the rec center at ASU, most college aged students are taking showers in swim trunks... The only real reason as to why this happens is simply because men are to shy about their manhood, that's it. What the point of hitting the showers if your not gonna wash your balls is beyond me because now you have to take a real one when you get home. A bunch of insecure little teenage girls in my personal view, but the 60 year old naked man who walks around the whole locker room without having the decency to go to his locker with a towel around him does not help.

Just to back up above comments about creeps...

I was born in '61 and guys were always comfortable with nudity when changing or showering in front of other guys, at ANY age. I never saw someone trying to change their underwear while wearing a towel until recent years. But I have to admit that throughout my adult life I have been creeped out by the creepy types who hang out in some gang showers and gym saunas just to stare. There are some gyms I will not go to anymore largely because of this. That said, I have no problem with walking naked from one end of the locker room to the next at any civilized gym.

yes, the "lurkers and gawkers" creep me out also.

my college dorm has shower stalls with 8 foot walls between the stalls and curtain-less entrace ways.

there was one janitor who would sit on a toilet (across from the shower stalls) during peak showering time; spending a loonngggggg time there.

after an unsigned note of complaint was left in the RA's (resident assistant) mailbox he was quickly transferred to another job location.

    Only speaking from my experience...

For the most part this year my roommate and I have always gone to the shower with at least our boxers on and have come back from the shower with at least our boxers on.

-I did not originally do this but I notice he was doing it so I started to but I think this is mainly due to the fact that I live on a coed floor because in all my other experiences with my roommates in the dorms (all male floors) we go naked only wrapped in a towel and return the same way. However, we always slid our boxers under the towel rather than taking our towel off, letting it swing, and putting our boxers on.

And no I have only showered at dorms where there are individual showers. (Wabash College, Ohio Dominican, Morehouse College, University of Georgia, Georgia State, The Ohio State University)

-The only college that came close to a communal shower was even close to communal was Georgia Tech.

-Of a matter of fact the only communal shower I've showered in was at my high school which only has communal showers in its 3 locker rooms.

Make that three. I was raised in a very conservative Catholic household, so I wasn't raised to be comfortable with nudity. The showers in my high school were communal, but no one ever used them, though we all did change in front of each other. The showers in my dorm building at my undergrad university had individual shower stalls with it's own little changing room. The showers at the university gym were communal, but I always just went back to my dorm/apartment to shower after working out. I changed in front of my roommate all the time, and vice versa.

I'm 23, and nowadays, the gym I use now has communal showers. I don't give two shits about being completely nude in front of others when using them. It's not that I'm voyeuristic or anything...the sight of the naked human body ("hot" or not) just doesn't phase me. I do walk around the locker room with a towel around my waist as a common courtesy for others.
