How effective do believe smear campagnes are during political elections?

the title pretty much says it all. i find that they are way more common in american politics but they still exist here in canada.

at the moment, the one i keep seeing is the one the conservatives are broadcasting against Ignatieff.

I've always seen smear campagnes as childish way for a party to win votes. i mean, if you're going to be prime minister, shouldn't you be above such nasty political tactics? Shouldn't you be participating in debates and winning voters over with the force and logic of your arguments. Shouldn't you be telling us why we should be voting for you instead of telling why we shouldn't be voting for the other guy?

most people who don't bother informing themselves don't bother voting. either that or they vote based on the general values of a particular parti; therefore don't even take smear campagnes into account. usually when people are lazy, they're LAZY. as an informed voter, most smear campagnes just make me loose interest in the originators parti. its an obvious ploy to divert attention from their poor platform

President John Adams lost his bid for a second term because of the smear campaign put on by Thomas Jefferson.

Candidates do it because it works.

ok. but there's a difference for calling someone out on something that they did which was truely wrong and quoting parts of long forgotten speeches while out of context

Remember when President Dick Cheney said, "If the Democrats are elected, we'll be attacked again ?" (as on 9/11)

He was a stupid liar, trying to use scare tactics in order to prevent the Democrats from winning.

    Isn't he dead yet ?
