    so i have a hp v5040u 1080p hd cam but the format it shoots in is NOT recognized by imovie... I want to compile my first HD vid... what can I use on the mac to convert the video format to imovie friendly?

    If it records in a non-standard format, it should have proprietary software bundled with it that will convert it to a usable format.

    I looked at the user manual online, and it says it uses AVI file format. My guess is that HandBrake http://handbrake.fr/ can convert your files to something the Mac can handle.

    I was just about to try handbrake lol. The mac plays them fine in vlc or divx , however, apple software... yeah different story

    Handbrake worked, re-encoding everything and then editing time!!!
