I heard really good things about Babylon 5, so I started watching it. I'm about half way through the 1st season, and it's ok so far, but I was expecting a little more from all the great things I've heard. Does it get more interesting?

No. Wait till they start getting rid of characters that you actually like, I think by the end of the show only 1 of the originals remains.

Have you tried Battlestar Galactica? AMAZINGLY well written. Best thing I have seen on television. Can honeslty only say there was one poorly written episode int he 4 year run.

Yet respect to the 1970s original.

In either case, BSG contains some very significant life lessons you want to think about. I fucking love it when the Cylon woman realises how meaning is gained by life being finite.

It does. Once Sinclair is gone it gets better. The character evolutions of G'kar and Londo are fantastic, but don't start really picking up steam until season 3 or so.

yeah, babylon 5 gets more interesting. I liked season 3/4 the most, when the overall story arch comes together a bit more. But it's all up to personal taste I guess.
    .
Battlestar Galactica (the remake) is pretty awesome. Caprica, its spinoff, is good too, though it's being canceled. I think the main reason is the storytelling style is a bit different from BSG. On the plus side it does have a muscled heavily tattoo'd gay character.

Things to get better in season 2 when Sheridan comes aboard, but they really pick up in seasons 3&4, The 5th season is a bit of an add-on since the writer/creator didn't know if the show would be picked up for a final season, so he resolved most of his plot points in season 4.

Like BSG, B5 has a continuous storyline through the first 4 seaons. Because of that little details found in earlier episodes take on importance later on.

Exactly right, it does get better when "Allen/Tron" come on board, and especially so in later seasons when "Chekov" gets a big role.

seriously the latter half fo the show is amazing. the shadow war and the vorlons!? in hindsight i might actually like it better than ds9's dominion war

i've tried sitting through the first few seasons again and can't.

Seasons 3 and 4 are great.

But honestly, it's not everyone's cup of tea.

If chess was a sci-fi show it would be Babylon 5, the first 2 seasons all the pieces are moved into place then at the mid to end of the 3 season and 4th season you can't look away.

Almost every single early episode had a little a purpose, that works as an episode but is truly amazing as a whole series.

Yes, it absolutely gets better!! It only really starts to get going about midway through the second season. The 3rd season is the best of all, lots of stuff comes together and pays off. The 4th season is great too, although it sags a bit in the middle.

The 5th season you can skip altogether, except for the final episode. The reason is because they thought there wouldn't be a 5th season, so most of the major plot lines are tied up at the end of the 4th. But the final episode is quite touching, and you don't need to have seen the 5th season to understand it.

Feel free to ask me more about it if you want. icon_smile.gif

I'm glad to see there are many other fans of both BSG and B5 on here. BSG certainly raised the bar for SF series, and it is now my favorite ever, but I still appreciate B5 for what it was, and for the awesomeness of the story as it developed and picked up steam. icon_smile.gif

Picking up late, but I'll echo what others have said - B5 does get better starting around Season 3. It's become one of my favorites, actually.

And the reimagined BSG is also incredible.

No, it doesn't get better. I'm a huge scifi nut and this is one of those rare ones I couldn't even watch. Wow.....just thinking back how horrible it was......was Flounder really there with a vampire that was supposed to be comedy support?
