im starting back to the gym in about a months time and i was just wondering if i should go swimming after my workout? im a slim build, ectomorph i guess (140 lbs), 5'10 and im looking to bulk up over the summer and gain a couple of stone hopefuly. would swimming after the gym be bad for this? id like to at least swim once a week or should i just cut out the swimming alltogether and just stick to weights? just realised this should be in the fitness section icon_lol.gif

If you're looking to bulk, cut out the swimming altogether...or at least keep it to a minimum.

I agree with paulflexes, swimming is not for bulking. Nevertheless it can be useful as part of a complete exercise program.

In the Army, I used to do gym workouts over lunch (very long lunches), alternating with days when I ran 2 miles on a woodland cross-country course. My goal wasn't bulking & brute strength, but meeting Army requirements for stamina, agility & speed. I generally did some swim laps next, which was both aerobic and also a kind of post-exercise stretching. And then I'd finish with a sit in the sauna, which further helped to avoid muscle soreness, to which I was prone.

Your regimen that you develop may be unique to you, and if bulking is your primary goal, swimming laps might be a good finish simply to retain flexibility. I would discuss this with a trainer, if one is available where you are. Swimming can help with toning and some sculpting, and cardio, but not bulking directly.

I wouldn't go swimming after a gym workout. After you're done lifting weights, your body is hungry and you need to feed it and replace the glycogen you just burned off. By doing intense cardio right after, you're just burning up even more stored glycogen. Save the swimming for non-gym days.
