My new car car a factory mounted roof rack, but I need to buy a bike rack for my mountain bike to attach to it.
Been looking around, seems there are many, the best are Thule & Yakima.
    But the prices are insane!
some are fork mounted, wheel mounted, locks, fairing, noise..
So confused, thought this was a simple ad on.
Can anyone recommend or review one they have had success with.
    Thanks in advance.

I think a trunk or tow hitch rack is best. That's what we have for our bikes. A roof rack is good for a cargo pod, and lower-profile things like skis, surfboards and kayaks. But a bike is easier to mount & dismount on a rear rack of some sort, it's not exposed to insect hits, nor overhead clearance problems, and doesn't create as much wind drag & noise, plus you can keep on eye on things in your rear-view mirror.

A drawback can be opening the rear hatch or trunk, but some rack designs largely avoid or minimize that problem. We currently have a Saris brand that lets us lift the trunk open, but really a 2-person job if a bike is mounted.

Another drawback of rear mounting is road spray, if you get caught on wet roads. Because of air flow patterns the back of a vehicle gets dirtiest when roads are wet.

Since you have a factory roof rack, then you will not fit a square or circular mount. You'll need a universal mount. I've been trying to get one universal that can hold two bikes plus add storage to your helmets/gear at the price of one, and this one seems like a good fit. I've been looking at this and wanting to sell my Yakima universal fork rack for sometime.

This is the one I currently have. This one's simple and works great for all racks (square, round, or factory). It's best to just go to an outdoor specialty store such as Dick's Sporting Goods instead of going online as these are widely available. You also might want to invest on a few locks if you buy one with this model since they come separate. And you might want to buy two forklifts to accommodate friends and to streamline the look on your car.
