    It's PR bullshit...
Nothing real... they're still going to continue donating to anti-gay politicians.

    Sadly...this^. Yet...

...I think they try. I don't think they fully comprehend, but this isn't about penance, it's about progress, and a little bit has been made. Expecting a national mia culpa campaign is entirely unrealistic. It won't air. It's not a consumer message. It's an HR message. A consumer message has already been crafted that is subtle, and could be read as two college roomies by the squeamish conservative buying public to whom it matters. And I doubt the board scoffed at the cost of this for one moment. They're smart. Things like this are budgeted for and the $16K (at best) spent to produce it just came in at a register in Miami. A minor drop in the bucket.

That doesn't discount the company's effort, nor a corporation having to face the reality of being dragged into the new millennium kicking and screaming until their ancient capitalist voices die off and are eventually replaced by slightly more progressive if equally capitalistic leadership who will still donate to people who advance their interests, looking the other way at what they see as minor infringements on the overall objective. Gay target employees are not the only people compromised at the expense of dividend checks. And in the end, the video is really not including us, it's lumping us in with the "everyone" else that may hate gays, tolerate their gay colleagues long enough to supervise them but not give them the shifts they want or need, continue to subtly make the workplace uncomfortable for them, and be pissed off when they advance more quickly than their ignorant homophobic asses because the glbt employee earned it through a work ethic tested by their homophobic supervisor's under-educated un-ambitious stuck-in-register- and-returns-forever selves.

We win by advancing on merit and effort, not solely on sound bites.

And the vast majority of us will still shop there as long as they offer what we want and need (mostly the former).

They grow. We change. They try. We buy. Nothing new.

^Marry me. I'd ask William Safire but he's dead and wasn't really my type when he was breathing. Stimulating as he may have been, I'm fairly certain you'd be more fun after dinner, too.

Actions speak louder than words. They'd do better donating the money they used to make that PSA on the Matthew Shepard foundation, or politicians fighting for LGBT rights.

I'm conflicted on this. The current Target senior corporate management appears to be homophobic.

At the same time, I have personal gay friends who are career Target mid-level executives, out and covered by corporate plans that recognize gay domestic partnerships. When I rode my motorcycle in the Twin Cities Gay Pride Parade, the biggest corporate march unit was from Target, and the biggest display tent in Loring Park was also Target's. Guys here from Mpls can confirm that.

Target also donates a bicycle to our AIDS SMART Ride each year to raffle, and that bike is sitting right here now in this office, literally within arm's reach of me from this chair. And they set up tents on the ride itself, with gifts of food and other items, I don't know what they have planned for us this year in November, but they're participating again.

Of course that's the Target regional operations that donate to us, not their corporate HQs in Mpls that has created all this furor. So I dunno, and why I remain conflicted. One side of me wants to boycott them, and another side of me knows another side of Target. I'm on the edge with this.

Those are very good points that people need to realize about most large corporations with homophobic/bigoted upper management. The suits may bitch about "homos" behind closed door - and they're free to do that - but they'll "act" in support of us as long as they realize doing the opposite would affect their pockets.

And that's all that really matters anyway. As long as there's pressure to give us equal rights, they can bitch all they want...after giving us equal rights. icon_wink.gif

It's not the plane that I'm looking to fly, Paul.
Either way, that sucks, that means you won't have any time for landing some of the bull dolphin running now down your way right now. icon_cry.gif

    It's also called damage control.

Take note though, Target has not changed its 'spot' in regard to their corporate policy about donating to anti-gay politicians/groups:

    http://thebusysignal.com/2011/03/29/conscientious-consumerism-or-why-i%E2%80%99m-boycotting-target-but-still-eating-chick-fil-a/

"For a glorious few weeks in early March, it looked as though Target may have finally been ready to make amends with the gay community. On February 10, Target posted a press release announcing the exclusive distribution of a special edition of Lady Gaga’s new album The Advocate. As part of their agreement, Gaga asked Target to “start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they’ve made in the past…our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community and to redeem the mistakes they’ve made supporting those groups.” Unfortunately, less than a month after that press release, the deal was off. Citing Target’s unwillingness to adhere to her strict pro-gray requirements, Gaga backed out of the deal.

So the boycott rages on. My underwear collection is growing thin, and so too will my sock collection, but that’s a small price to pay for peace of mind....."

    Target Sales down

"net retail sales for the five weeks ended April 2, 2011 were $5,955 million, a decrease of 4.5 percent from $6,233 million for the five weeks ended April 3, 2010. On this same basis, March comparable-store sales decreased 5.5 percent."

Yeah no, Walmart doesn't appeal to diversity, just poor black people, white trash, fresh-off-the-boat asians, fresh-across-the-rover messicans, FAT people, and my dad.
