Okay....so I went to a house party last night.
This gay guy (who's drank far too much alcohol) changes the topic of discussion to gay men donating sperm.

He made the argument that if a gay man was asked by a close friend or family member to donate his sperm so the other person/persons could have a baby and the prospective donor DID NOT WANT to do donate - this automatically made him a selfish person.

I argued the point that it is completely within the choice of the potential donor to do so and if he didn't want to donate then that is his prerogative and should be considered selfish. Furthermore, if this is not okay with the person asking the potential donor then THAT PERSON/PERSONS are to be considered selfish.

    Thoughts.....?
Has anybody donated sperm out there?

I don't think its selfish. That's a big thing to have one of your kids out there, even if you aren't the one raising it. Personally, I would probably donate, but I can see why guys wouldn't.

One a lighter note, I leave you with a funny related story. One of my friends who is 5'6 wanted to donate sperm to get some cash so he called a sperm bank. The lady asked how tall he was and after he told her, she just said "oh, we don't need any. sorry." He was so sad because they clearly didn't want it because he was short. It was great to laugh at him about it for a while. The end. icon_smile.gif

This was another point of the argument. This guy said it was selfish to want to be involved in the child's life! If I fathered a child by any method, I'd want to be a part of the child's life and visa versa.

I love the story. It certainly made my day. Poor guy.
How did he recover after that?

How mean, eugenics at work eh. I still wonder *why* exactly they have anything about shorter people, it's been a trend in the western world (particularly N. America) that people are becoming a little shorter, not taller.

That means that in 25 years the average person will finally fit with both their legs in that seat in that plane designed in 1965.

Apparently only Europeans are becoming taller (in my native country I'm pretty average at 6'1")

I'm just saying it's a little ridiculous that they would so carelessly toss aside a set of genes based on length... they'd probably take me, as I'm 6'1 with light eyes - but then they have no idea they'd get total psycho genetics.

Sperm donor can earn up to $1,200 a month-
    Just saying.

Although... women can make about $10,000 per egg donation. icon_eek.gif ...and about $35,000 + expenses if they become surrogates. icon_eek.gificon_eek.gif

    Talk about being lucky.

*Specialty eggs can earn you even more*

I used to donate sperm back in college to pay the bills. I did it about once a week to the local sperm back, who would pay me for every "sample" I donated.

They absolutely loved my sticky white baby batter. Kept calling me for more and more "donations" to their "bank."

Well, six years later, I get a call from a woman saying that she would like to meet me, because she has something that is part of my life. I meet this woman, who comes in with a baby... this thing was absolutely the most beautiful baby in the world. He had blue eyes and silky blonde curly hair, pale beautiful skin, and some big-ass feet.

She asked if I wanted to hold him... I broke into tears as I extended my arms to grab the child. The emotion overtook me. She said she didn't want anything from me, just thought I should meet my son. I asked what I could do to make things right for this child. She said he needed his father. Ok, this story did not really happen, but it would have been really interesting.

Not selfish. Donating sperm comes with the understanding that the mother or child will attempt to contact/find out who you are in the future and you may (or may not) want that.

I've been told that now in the UK (not sure about any other countries) that this process is now no longer anonymous. It is a requirement that clinics hold details on the donor - I'm not certain how accurate this is.

Going back to a previous argument I had with this drunken guy, he went on to argue that he would never start a relationship with a guy who has ever or will ever seriously consider donating his sperm.

My argument was that it is completely up to the choice of the individual.
I would like to note as well that this guy was a complete drunken arse....

    Am I missing something here?

"if he didn't want to donate then that is his prerogative and should be considered selfish. Furthermore, if this is not okay with the person asking the potential donor then THAT PERSON/PERSONS are to be considered selfish."

So, in other words...you're selfish if you DO and also selfish if you DON'T...
