Same as everyone else in a farm town: worked the harvest. Although after a year in college, I moved up to doing quality control in the fruit processing plant.

BTW: Not much help for Canadians, but there are thousands of summer internships available for US science and engineering students at national labs. (DOE, NASA, DOD, EPA.) I used to hire two or three every year. The larger places rent out whole apartment complexes to house all of the interns. (Where I worked, they had to break up the housing because the partying got out of hand.) Pretty good money, all expenses paid, may look good on a resume. Some of the locations are pretty remote though. Application deadlines are usually around February, and you need fairly good grades and a good letter from a prof. If you can claim any kind of minority status, you're in.

I normally would be, but I'm tired of seeing boring and stodgy, flavourless posts that read like a dry zine.

Freshmen & Sophomore Year: Worked at Macy's in the shoe department.
Junior Year: Worked as a graphics designer for a software company.
Senior Year: Interned at a finance firm.

I didn't get financial support from anyone so I had to work my ass off all year long. I didn't get a single summer break.
